Pipes are meant to be smoked. I smoke the same pipe all day, then put it in the rack, clean it on Sunday and it goes back into the rotation.

I think it depends on the pipe. Some will be more 'durable' than others and you'll gravitate to those, if you're smoking two or more bowls a day.

I've read opinions stating that a briar isn't delivering its best flavor until it's been smoked around 300 bowls.

I have yet to test this theory, strangely enough, and have only smoked new cobs and estate briar.

In the old days some guys would smoke the same pipe until the chamber got so caked up they couldn't get tobacco in it or it burnt out.
There's definitely varying views on this subject.
What I've found to be most common among pipe smokers from this forum as well as pipe shows is the rule of rest the pipe the same number of days as the number of bowls you had in it. So if you have two bowls in the same pipe one day then let it sit the next day and the day after before having another bowl.

Most pipes you can smoke all day, some you can't, the test is after a smoke you run a pipe cleaner thru it, dry or semi dry, load her up again, if it comes out wet or dripping whatever, put the SOB up.! :puffy:

In all of the years I've smoked pipes I never had one that couldn't be smoked multiple times a day. The issue isn't briar, it's the smoker. Ever looked at cross sections of bowls that have seen decades of use? It's instructive. Barely any penetration of the briar by oils, tars, or other deposits from smoking. What you do see sometimes are char on the chamber walls and cracks near the base of the chamber, caused by excessive heat and moisture. That's the result of stupid smoking habits - smoking wet tobacco while puffing like a steam locomotive, and trying to burn every last little strand of weed at the bottom of the chamber. A briar pipe can take a lot of use, but a determined moron can destroy anything.

And I am not sure your average moron has to be very determined....
I'd almost write, "Pipes don't smoke bad(ly), people do". (And it's probably true.)
