I never understood why retailers were selling a scarce product at discounted prices. Pricing should reflect demand and scarcity so there is inventory available. 17$ sounds about right to stop all the hoarders. lol
Escudo seems to have taken a jump lately as well, and it has had a drop in taste, IMO. I watched it go up to $25 at The Briary, and there are finally tins on the shelf, but it still sells... at a more normal rate now. So, the lesser quality tasting shit is there for anyone who wants to try it, ha ha.

I have to disagree a bit. Retailers most always pass on price increases to consumers. If you have been following the markets you would know that inflationary price pressure are indeed quite real and are further exacerbated by supply chain woes. Raw materials cost ALOT more and shipping has almost double what to used to since the beginning of the year. So SG is charging more and passing it on to their suppliers and they in turn pass it on to us. Which by the way they have to to maintain their profit margins. This is playing out in all commodities across the world. To make matters worse supply and demand factors might play a role here as well. This is a good example of how corrosive inflation is. SG up 36% in a year. Did you get a corresponding 36% bump up in wages to keep up? You are 100% correct in your assertion that people would pay every more. I bet if it went to $100 a tin there would be takers...but less and less.

I personally don't really care how high prices go because don't really "need" any more as I stashed away enough for my lifetime and for the lifetime of who ever inherits it. But TAD is a powerful force to overcome!!!!

I think you mean distributers... but, we have absolutely no proof of this, just as we have no proof that retailers are just trying to balance the scales to keep SG on the shelves for a bit longer, giving people more of a chance to have a chance to buy a tin or two. It's all speculation. But... meanwhile, I don't mind the higher prices, and I'm glad it will become out of reach for some. Whatever the reasons, it will cut down on hoarders.

Being the increase is only on tins and not boxes would lead one to believe it’s something specific to the tinned product. Boxes did not have that type of increase as others mentioned here. The boxes are still ~$40.

I have watched the Sam Gawith drops closely over the past week. SPC was up about a dollar per 50Gr tin (generalization). Watch City was about the same as prior drop earlier this year. The only large price jump was the $17.98/tin at Cup O Joe's and TobaccoPipes. Both of these sites have been purchased by Sutliff and Cup O Joes changed ownership just last week. So it is the Sutliff distribution sites that saw that the larger price increase.

Just FYI. I'm not making a conclusion or judgement. But it is an important fact to know when discussing the price increase issue.

Damn, with your collection of high ends and rare tobaccos, I wouldn't think you to be a price watcher. I never even pay attention to prices, ha ha. But, this is good info.

I bought all my SG product in the summer of 2012. Tins were just a tad over 9.00 a tin and pounds were 52-55 at the small b/m's I was buying from. I got a few things from a couple of the big guys but their prices were not any lower than my mom and pops.

I got lucky one day as I took a look at what JRcigars had and I was able to grab 25 tins of Best Brown Flake for 9.01 a tin. I am pretty sure that was my last tin purchase as it was much easier to get the bulks even though I hated buying bulks over tins.

Where? There weren't any released the us market this time. The next time they appear, I'd wager a price increase accompanies them.

I would be real careful buying something just because it has a Samuel Gawith name on a tin or a 250 gram bag. They have plenty of losers in their line up so be careful.

Admittedly I didn’t go looking at stock quantities so if a vendor only updated tin prices and not box prices, it’s an incorrect point on being specific to tins.

Other than a few tins of squadron leader from a few years ago, I don’t buy anything from Gawith so I was not retail hopping looking at actual inventory.

Crazy how the market changes. It was just in 2017 or so that SG & GH couldn’t get rid of some of their blends. I remember Smoking Pipes had over 1,000 tins of Lakeland Dark. It wasn’t selling at all so they dropped the price down to $5.99 a tin, still took a long time to sell, I bought a shit ton of those tins at that price. Cabbie’s Mixture was another one that wouldn’t move, so they dropped the price of those tins too.

Now they can’t keep them on the shelves and good for them, if I was selling their blends I’d hike up the prices too!

I’m just glad I stocked up when I did. There will be a point when you all will wish they were selling for only $18 bucks a tin.
