I usually use non-iodized salt and everclear.

I'm giving the coffee grounds a try, mixed with a bit of activated charcoal.

Salt? Coffee grounds?? Charcoal??? If I have a pipe that just a good long rest won't de-stank I'll just toss it in the trash.

Actually the vast majority of my several dozen pipes were estates. Bought from pipe dealers. I don't even want to contemplate what they looked like before they were restored.

Well, the coffee grounds didn't do much after a two day rest.

Back to the salt & alcohol.

I'll give the coffee another shot in the future, I'm sure.

I am working on cleaning a old Linkeman I found at a junk shop. So far I've done tried the salt and everclear treatment and I let it sit for over 48 hours. It still smelled bad. I took the stem off when doing this so it's not the stem. Right now it's sitting on the shelf packed with coffee grounds from one of those K-cups. I'm just loaded it on Monday so I'm waiting until tomorrow morning to see if there is a difference in the bowl.

Depending on what was smoked in it, the salt and everclear treatment might not be enough. You might have to send it to Walker Briar Works to get an ozone treatment. Some of those old ghosts can be pretty tough and that's the only way to get them out.
