Sadly the Ingo Garbe Lovat estate pipe I purchased had developed a soft spot under the cake which was not seen. The first smoke was fine and incredibly dry. When I smoked the pipe 5 days later in the rotation I felt a hot spot where I had my thumb so when I cleaned it out after it cooled I noticed what looked like a burnout in progress.
I notified the dealer and he asked me to send it back and once he inspected it he agreed it was a burnout in progress and offered me a full refund. I thanked him for his exceptional customer service on the pipe and told him how sad I was that this happened since I’d never had anything I’ve purchased from him develop anything and it was easy to see how this could not be seen since it had a cake and smoked very well.
He did have a few other pipes by Ingo Garbe all estates but one was unsmoked and I asked if he would place the refund toward purchasing that pipe, he agreed and I am in process of getting the payment to him.
May I introduce my new Ingo Garbe.

That is a wonderful Garbe! I love the classic lines on that beauty.

Man, that is some serious grain, banjo! Iiiiii like it, & I'm not usually a huge fan of stacks. That one, though, is just too graceful NOT to like. I'm just sorry for the loss of the lovat; that IS one of my very favorite shapes, & any loss of one is just a doggone shame.

Handsome design. I think I might designate it an egg shape, but it is quite unique. Nice flow to its shape.

Banjo, I think those might have both been my pipes, originally. Sorry to hear about the burnout. It was an earlier Garbe pipe, if I recall, and came as part of a lot I got from a European collector. Never actually smoked it myself.

pipehunter, no need to apologize at all, when I inspected the pipe once I got it there was a neatly trimmed cake which showed no evidence of any issues. I smoked it and was totally taken with how dry the smoke was and I don’t load dry tobacco I have to have what I feel is the correct hand feel to me which indicates pliable tobacco with what I’ve come to equate with the proper amount of moisture content for me.
As I stated the pipe was in a 5 day rotation when I loaded it up and began having my smoke. It was well into the smoke when I felt the bowl quite hot on my thumb so I set the pipe aside and let it extinguish itself. Once it had cooled I saw a somewhat egg shaped area in the vicinity of where it was hot on my thumb so I contacted the dealer as I stated in my original post.
The thing I feel sadness over is that nobody else will ever enjoy that early beautiful Lovat which when you come to think about it takes a little chunk of history out of the maker. I knew from the start nobody could have seen this had it not been smoked. If these pipes were yours you were a very lucky man to have owned them, I’m waiting for the unsmoked, almost Swan shaped, Ingo Garbe to get to me. Please don’t fret over what happened since it presented itself as smokable and proved that it wasn’t, it happens and all you can do is move on, regards.

Classic Garbe shaping with the minute S-curved and well-defined transition. So many of his pipes are elegant, as is this piece. Good on ya, banjo!

Banjo, you have one of the most impressive collections of pipes I have ever seen. And the thing I like most is that you smoke them all. Happy Smokes my friend.
