Well Yadda306, what is a rye then? As far as I know, all rye's are blended. And I find it funny that the dark horse would fall under the rye category and the CC Sherry Cask wouldn't as, to my tastes, the Dark Horse has a much stronger 'bourbon' flavour than the Sherry Cask does.
I know there are strict laws surrounding bourbob and scotch, but I didn't realize they had the same rules when it comes to rye. I would love to learn the difference between Canadian Whiskey and Rye.

For a whiskey to be rye, it must be distilled from at least 51% rye. Rye is a type of grass style grain (think rye bread). Canadian Whiskeys have historcially been known as rye (this is really a misnomer), but aren't true ryes since they don't have to be 51% rye grass.

I prefer a good scotch as well but it has to be the sherry aged just adds a sweetness and fruity note.

I can't do the highland styles that give a smokey flavor. Well until my taste changes.

+1 for Templeton
This stuff sells for USD 95 in Switzerland…..I really like it, but not THAT much. Will have to get my fill in a few months when I get back to the States.

There is a distillery not far from where I live in Sperryville, VA. They have wonderful rye whiskey and kits for aging your own. You can get a small keg, add the unmatured whiskey into it with burned wood chips and age it for 8+ months. Just wonderful!

After reading a couple of articles detailing how a surprising number of "craft" distilleries actually buy their product from an industrial-scale distiller in Indiana (MGP) and then repackage it (as opposed to distilling their own stuff, using a recipe handed down blah-blah-blah marketing jargon), I found a link to a blog that lists both actual distilleries and independent bottlers that repackage the first list's product...
The Complete List of American Whiskey
Enjoy! (Responsibly, of course...)
My wife and I have been working our way through a bottle of Feisty Rye, locally distilled and bottled here in Colorado.

Yes, on Rye. My first standby was Jim Beam, and it went with me when camping. In the last year I've bought Ryes from Bulleit, George Dickel, Knob Creek, and Wild Turkey. I've tried one or two other brands over the years, but these are what I remember.
Thanks for the song lyrics, Rangerearthpig. I love those old cowboy songs.

Bought a bottle of Rittenhouse 100 Proof Straight Rye Whisky. Anyone else try this? I like it.
What's the significance of being "bottled in bond"? Rittenhouse is.

Went on the Bourbon Tour last year and it was really something. I think every major manufacturer of bourbon mentioned that rye was making a comeback. Seeing all the distilleries really helped me narrow down my favorite spirits.

Being a scotch drinker I am not a fan of the spices in rye whiskey (much more pronounced than in Irish whiskey).

Forty Creek make some great whiskies I love the Double Barrel and I hear from a buddy that the Confederation Canadian Oak is amazing (yet to try!) These tend to have about 1/3 Rye in the blend I believe. Great balance and flavour - perfect for the "Prohibition Manhattan" (A Manhattan cocktail made with Canadian Whisky rather than American Rye)

I've been researching Canadian Whisky lately, and was surprised to learn that a very large percentage of the rye whisky available around the world today is distilled and aged at Alberta Distillers in Calgary.
The distillery is owned by Jim Beam, so guss where they source their rye. And top shelf rye whisky's such as Whistle Pig and Lock, Stock and Barrel, source 100% of their rye, already aged in barrels, from Alberta Distillers (Whistle Pig is in the process of growing and distilling their own rye in Vermont, however).
There is also a very small craft distillery segment starting up in Canada, with Ontario and BC leading the pack, and Alberta entering the market in the past year.
There are some Single Malt Whisky's hitting the market from Ontario and BC (Still Waters Distillery, Pemberton Distillery, Okanogan Springs Distillery), that are interesting, but young, 3 to 5 years old at max.
Alberta, who actually grow and supply the barley for many of the top scotch producers in the world, has also opened their first craft distillery called Eau Claire Distillers in Turner Valley. They will be producing Alberta's fist Single Malt Whisky, first batch to be released 2017 or 2018.
Canada is a little slow getting into the craft distilling movement, as the US has been enjoying the fruits of such a market for a couple decades now, but has some very exciting products. Needless to say, the future looks bright.

I didn't know that Templeton Rye had a connection to Iowa--I'm now disappointed to learn that it's no longer made here! Ah well...guess I'll stick to Scotch. Cedar Ridge sure looks intriguing, though.

I like my Rittenhouse rye, and I drink it in an Old Fashioned - the old fashioned way of course, none of that fruits, soda and bullshit.

High West Craft Whiskey makes some interesting blends. I've only been able to try a couple; one having just a little too much spice for me. But I would like to try their blend of Campfire Whiskey.
