It is a very nice pipe indeed. I love the style and finish. By the way Drezz, you know when you see someone and you are like "damn, where have I seen that guy, he is so familiar", whenever I look at your avatar I try to remember where I have seen you.

Congratulations drezz - that is truly beautiful! I love the cutty shape and a proper, deep sandblast and you have them both. I think my favourite bit is the little stand on the bottom, which Ryan somehow managed to keep through all of the processes required to create and finish your pipe. Very, very classy.

That's an impressive feat isn't it! One little coffee jitter on the sanding wheel could have taken it right off. When I was looking at other cutty's at the onset of this project I notice how well Ryan places and forms that little foot. While many seem haphazard, Ryan's tend to be a continuation of the profile of the bowl.

Ha! I wish I could help you out there! That nagging feeling in the back of your head that's like two pieces of a puzzle that don't quite go together can be aggravating.

That is a fabulous pipe. Hope you get many years of pleasure from it. It stirs a barely dormant cutty or Devil Anse PAD, though...dammit!

I took some time to run ~1/2 of a bowl of McCranies Red Ribbon through this pipe last night. I was surprised how dry it smoked for a brand new pipe. Lighting a cutty requires a bit of a different approach, and I'm not sure I've mastered it yet. So far I've been applying a bit of spit to the rim of the bowl before applying flame - I've heard this helps reduce rim char.
It's really a joy to handle though and Ryan makes some very comfortable stems. I'm looking forward to getting it broken in and finding the tobacco that really sings in it!

Great buy, Drezz. That blast pattern is awesome.
Brad, I love the way the three areas complement each other on the pipe Ryan made for you. Beautiful.

I'd be willing to trade photography lessons for a pipe...

I've REALLY tried to take better pictures. Changed lights, take photos outdoors, changed lenses, changed settings, changed backgrounds. The only thing I haven't changed is the camera, but that is all that's left. So one of these days when I have a few bucks to spend, I'm buying a new damn camera ! I have a digital Rebel XT so I figured the problem had to be somewhere else, but in the end that is about all it could be, something wrong with the camera.
Glad it made it to you Drezz, and glad you like it !

You will probably have better luck loading it all the way to the top to break it in. It's so tough to light a half bowl with such a cant on it. I find that tamping more often is a better way to get a good ember going in a cutty, versus spending a ton of time with a match to light. Get it going decently and then tamp slowly around the bowl until it's lit well and even. That seems to work better for me anyway.
I enjoyed working with your design ideas. I like the way stem and bowl are sort of two separate design elements that work together. Holding the stem in my fingers and picturing the pipe in the teeth, I think that's where the design really shines. When the stem half of the equation is taken out of the picture, I think the bowl takes on a really cool look. The stem sort of visually disappears and the bowl takes on a life of its own. Hold your thumb over the first half of the stem in the pictures and see what I mean.

I'll give that a try tonight! The night before last I tried a Dunhill Flake in it last night. It fits a flake very nicely but I've never had much luck in keeping a flake lit. Tonight I'm thinking some wessex brigade campaign dark flake.
I always enjoy the designing process with you Ryan, I'm sure we will work on something again soon. Probably not until the Canadian Dollar climbs out of the gutter though .
I'm thinking up next will be some sort of squat wide bulldog/rhodesian along the lines of the below but with a blasted bottom and smooth rim - not necessarily with the military mount. Be forewarned!
--- or it could be something completely different. Wherever my flighty desires may land at that time.

Ok last addition to this thread I swear -- but the pipe stand I ordered from ebay specifically for this pipe finally came! I think they make a handsome set.

Just noticed the sailboat in the background in the photo above... And the bowl's forward rake reminds me of the bow of a sailboat. Very fine pipe and photo!
