Today I tried to get the dottle at the bottom of the pipe lit. Stupid. I know. I ended up with a little unpleasant taste. I almost had a heart attack. [:)] So I used vanilla extract to "fix' the pipe. I hope it will be OK now. I did smoke it one more time before the vanilla to see if the pipe is damaged. That taste was there but went almost completely away as I smoked. I hope the vanilla extract does the trick.
Drunk post much? 8O

Never heard of that, Man up and smoke the Dottie, it's not a snickers bar , it's a pipe, you may have ruined a fine smoking machine with that Betty Crocker fix,SHEEZ,!

Or don't smoke the dottle- dump it out and rest your pipe. Or you could put some strawberry frosting in there to see if it makes it taste good. Either way.

My wife's family has been in the vanilla extract business for three generations. I love vanilla. Many, many things go better with vanilla. But the idea of putting vanilla extract in my pipe has never occurred to me and hopefully I can banish the thought from my memory!

I used damp but not wet pipe cleaner. So I did not pour the vanilla into the pipe. Doesn't this make a difference?

Sorry for the double post. My father used to use vanilla in this way. I just found out the vanilla is an oil. So it looks like I damaged the pipe. What can I do to repair it? There is pipe cleaning fluid that I can order. Maybe an alcohol based repair solution can get rid of the oil?

I doubt you really hurt the pipe. The alcohol should dry out and you can smoke out the vanilla taste. The oil content should be slight.

Good news. My pipe is smoking alright with a little vanilla taste. :) I still plainly taste the tobacco I am smoking. However, I still taste briar due to allowing the flame of the lighter to touch the bottom of the bowl for a few seconds. :(
