The first time I read the complete Holmes long stories was when I was a teenager, and I've revisited the Holmes fiction several times through the years. It was good to finally learn about the calabash - I've wondered about that, without really bothering to research it myself, so the information was appreciated.
Finally, might ship's tobacco have been a flake tobacco? As I remember it, flake was originally made to preserve tobacco for sailors on long voyages - the pressed cakes kept well and slices would be cut off it when the sailor had the oportunity to smoke.
