I drew some attention on Forums when I mentioned I'd been holding a tin of Royal Yacht, and various members all but dared me to try it and report. It was a good tobacco- forward plum aromatic, even burning and cleverly balanced. Like others, I never understood why it was an issue. You like or you don't. It's not overbearing or especially strong. No issues that I could discern. You don't have to like it, but don't complain. If it's not your thing, don't buy it, don't smoke it. I like several Va/Per. Russ O.'s Fire Storm, with dark-fired as a condiment, struck an especially favorable note with me. Va/Per is a large category of blends, so you can sample widely and find your bliss, I think.

Mail call. Thanks for all the advice!
Mmmm, st Bruno... not plummy, but whatever the topping is - it's delicious, and it's about the same strength as RY.
I'm late to the recommendation game, but Rattray's Wallace is similar in strength, leaf, and topping to RY. A bit more berry in the topping. It's supposed to be their spin on University Flake, but I haven't tried that one so I can't compare. I've always thought it odd that people claim to love the strength and topping of University and/or Wallace, but hate on the Royal Yacht. I think it has more to do with the fermented tobacco juice than it does the much maligned topping.

Alright, so I've sampled Union Square, Newminster Supior Navy Flake, and St. Bruno. Thanks again for all the suggestions. The clear favorite for me is Newminster, St Bruno in second, and Union Square third. I'll toss Union square in the cellar a while, may puff St Bruno now and again, but the NSNF, my goodness, ill be definitely be stocking up. May a write a review a bit later.

I'm hoping you all humor me on this. Ive asked for recs on VAs before, but time has passed, and I have new information about my tastes. I'm looking for a nice VA hoping you guys can help. I've tried a few. Royal Yacht, Capstan, OGS, Yorktown, and Opening Night by C&D. I do like them all, but the only one I constantly reach for, and enjoy to the last sip, is the Royal Yacht. Capstan smells like heaven, but its a bit too soft in flavor to me. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with OGS. If I can get to the second half of the bowl, I'm in. Rich tobacco taste, but the brightness(?) of the first half turns me off for some reason. Yorktown honestly was just about nothing to my taste buds. I want another VA in the lineup, but I'd like some help if your game. Any suggestions?
