While assembled it won't pass a pipe cleaner. I know this is not uncommon in the bent world, but it's annoying. I often get a gurgle midway through a bowl when I smoke bents, and I like to be able to quickly remedy that with a pipe cleaner.
Yes I know I could do the wrist fling trick, or simply buy bent pipes with spigot/military mount so they can be disassembled hot.

This thread shouldn't even exist. As a fellow Dutchman said a few posts above, what am I trying to prove? Sorry for wasting everyone's time. I just wanted to bellyache about my cheap pipe. Go back to your knitting, everyone ;)
I've never heard of anyone experiencing complications from disassembling a pipe mid smoke, from what I can tell it's just a myth, or at best it would only apply to people who actually smoke their pipes hot enough to burn your hand.

I think the thread is productive enough when we've learned that your $45 pipe is constructed to the same standards as most pipes at any price.

I guess this is what you get for $45. Broken mortise, but it was drilled wayyyy off center and couldn’t pass a pipe cleaner anyhow. Not a bad looking pipe, but now it’s probably just going in the trash. You get what you pay for, as they say.

The mortise on this pipe is also perfectly normal, I had the same complaint about my Icarus Bent Egg a few years back and that's when I learned that drilling through the mortise is normal for bent pipes.
As long as the tenon is reasonably long it doesn't affect the fit.

Interesting! Good call. It never occurred to me that the missing chunk of briar there could have been caused by the drilling process. The tenon does fit nice and tight. LOL, so this really was a silly thread after all. How embarrassing.
