This may have been brought up before. My tastes have changed, in my 45 years of pipe smoking. Usually an Aro smoker but now a Non-Aro guy. When I read ratings on like Smoking Pipes etc. the room note number, 4 stars means that its strong and you can notice when you walk into a room, question; is that in a good way or a bad way? I know, I know, different people react differently and I never really cared bout what other people thought about my smoke (wiff never really complained, sometimes complimented) but I'm not a d*ck about it either. I'm starting to like the Virginias and English, A LOT. So, I assume 4 stars is good but is 4 stars good, like people won't complain or people will whine about it ? A general consensus. Thanks for any info...

Since, as you noted, it is so subjective, why not smoke some things and ask the wife her thoughts on the smell? That way, it won’t matter if 4 means good and strong or bad and strong because, based on my understanding of your post, the only meaningful metric is your wife’s opinion.

Im not sure, but when I see these ratings, I believe a 4 is a good room note.
I think the room note rating is more for US than others.
The vast majority of non smokers I know HATE the smell of pipes inside.
Some like a whiff when outside.
Because I smoke outside, and alone 99% of the time, room note doesn't mean much.

I think it's supposed to tell you how likely you are to get complimented on the pipe smell. Which like all of their ratings is subjective. Even strength of nicotine is going to change from person to person day to day.
I have read the reviews opposite from the way Sig does. On TR if there are more high bars toward the left side it says "pleasant" or "very pleasant," so I have read a 4 as people might find it unpleasant, so be cautious if avoiding offense is important. I usually smoke alone, but if I have family visiting I do take it into consideration. Of course if I've been reading that backwards, my family might think I'm being deliberately offensive. Oops.
Always assumed room note was rated by wives?
Molto Dolce has a fantastic room note, at least according to my wife. She also likes Maple Street and 4th Gen 1855. I just go by her ratings. Lol

My wife had covid a couple times and never regained her sense of smell all the way. So I can smoke anything in the house and she never really smells it. I let her try to smell different tobaccos in the bags and jars, and suprisingly, she can somewhat smell English blends and likes the smell.
wife noses are tricky instruments... I seem to never be able to predict what she will like.
My wife can smell an ant fart at 50 paces.
