Rochester, NY Pipe Club

I’m looking to start a pipe club in Rochester, NY. There’s probably a couple places we can meet up: Havana Moe’s in East Ave, Nick’s Cigars on Ridge Road in Greece, Elite on W. Henrietta, Nice Ash in Fairport.

With so much available online and some good b&m’s, I feel like we can do both for the community and meet up for monthly smokes. We may think our b&m’s might have a limited selection, but by supporting them, their pipe and pipe tobacco selection will probably grow. Hell, we might even cobble ourselves together an idea for a pipe shop of our own one day!

Open to any ideas as well (even cool names)!

That’s fine, kinda. Supporting the host of a meet up goes without saying, but I’d balk at having to smoke nothing but what they sell.
I’d bet that a little change in the poster would go a long way.

Please take lots of pictures and document the event. I'm sure that'll inspire prospective participants to pop out from the bushes!

I get what JP’s saying about smoking only their product, but they are one of the only places in town that has PS blends, so it’s a nice shift from what we might normally go for. Also, the general manager said he can get his reps to drop of samples of other things the rep might carry for us to sample. If we support stores like this, they’ll carry what we like if we’re buying it. Also, the lounge is really nice and is normally $10 for non-members, so them waiving the fee for us is already a good discount on top of the 15% off.

I’ll be stopping by this week to hand out some physical flyers and get more details for us.

(I tried to put this in the flyer, but I could only do so much, so people can reach out if they have questions).

It would still be nice if people were given the option of paying a "cutting fee", if they wished to smoke their own tobacco. You said the normal charge was $10 for non-members. To be honest, I'd probably want to either pay the $10 fee or just buy some stogies. I have more than enough tobacco to last five life times (if not more!) and I'm guessing whatever tobacco that they do currently have on hand, is probably PG laden "House Blends" or tins of aromatics. I would gladly buy a couple of tins, here and there, if they stocked decent tobaccos like Samuel Gawith / Gawith & Hoggarth, HU, Peter Stokkebye, etc.

Good luck with the event and I hope you have a decent turn out. I might be able to hit one of the meetings when I'm up in Buffalo, visiting my Son in college.

Quick update:

Spoke with Nice Ash and they advised their AC is dead, so there will be no AC.

While it may be warmer than normal, it is Bring Your Own Food and Beverage, so if you have a cool drink, feel free. I’ll have some beverages to to share as well.

How did it go?

Well, it was a hot one in the Flour City yesterday for sure. And the AC being out at the lounge could’ve been a huge deterrent, but we got a brave few to show up and have some pipes, sit inside (why didn’t we go outside?) and talk about our hobbies and ourselves.

Thanks to Kyle and Jack who showed up. We shared some of the blends from Nice Ash and sampled some Haddo’s Delight and Squadron Leader, and had ourselves a couple of cold beverages to keep us cool.

Also, Nice Ash Cigars was great. The shop discount and pretty much having the lounge to ourselves was a really nice treat and it’s a beautiful space.

I’ll be honest, pipe smoking had been a solitary activity for me for such a long time. So to have a couple of people to talk about the hobby with while having a pipe was so much fun.

We talked about making this a monthly club, so if we try for Tuesdays, our next meet up would technically be July 22. I’ll be reaching out to Nice Ash to confirm, but you bet we’ll be meeting!
