I got one for you Sam. If you just got back from NM, chances are you drove right by it.

A few years ago I took my daughter on a road trip to west Texas. You'd think not much to see but you'd be wrong. Driving I-10 out to Pecos Texas and just west of Pecos is a little town called Toyah.

Kevin Costner shot the opening scenes of a movie (Fandango) there in the old school house. Nearby, they shot some other scenes at a fictious restaurant "Chata Ortegas". It was part of the movie set they built just off interstate 10. I can't remember if it's before or after Toyah, but you can see the remains from the interstate. Park on the side and walk to it. There are some other movie locations nearby.

Anyway, we continued on to Marfa and stopping at the McDonald observatory, which I highly recommend. That area is more like Colorado than Texas. We had such a wonderful time. Great memories. Road trips are the best.

Here's a video of "Chatas" and the school house:

I think I remember seeing the signs for this town. I think west Texas is beautiful and always enjoy the long landscapes. It’s kind of a shame they’ve been ruined by those ubiquitous windmills now.

There's something special about west Texas, can't put my finger on it, but it's different. Yeah, the windmills... sigh

I love road trips if I can tent camp. I love them even more on a motorcycle. I rode from Florida to Colorado Rockies and back on my little bike , tent camping all the way, a couple of summers ago. It was fantastic

Years ago there use to be a motorcycle ride called the Iron Butt 100. You ride from Jacksonville, FL to San Diego, CA and back to Jacksonville in 100 hours or less. Get a gas reciept at the start and one in CA then another back in FL to prove you did it. I always wanted to try it but never did. I heard stories of guys usually making it to CA with no problem but riding back would get tough around Mobile, AL... falling alseep, that sort of thing. I think people still do it.
