Loved him in The Exorcist. He was in a couple of movies I saw recently, he played the captain in Voyage Of The Damned and the clueless Admiral in Kursk, he was great in both of them.
RIP.
BTW Jay it's probably easier to make a list of famous people who HAVEN'T voiced a character in the Simpsons.

Sad in a way that he is remembered by most for "The Exorcist," not that that wasn't an accomplished performance in a horror film, but he appeared in many films that were well above that one in cinematic quality. RIP Max.

Having never been even distantly threatened by fame, I really don't know, but only guess that people who pass from the spotlight but keep working in their art enjoy those years the most. It appears celebrity in its tangible aspects, though it is a tremendous ego drug, is a enormous pain in the ass. If you can work, get paid well, and continue your profession, life is better than autographs and one too many phony receptions, and strangers intercepting you in the street.

The guy was around so long and was in sooo many films that it starts breaking down into a generational understanding of his work. I was a Bergman fanatic, so that's how I always think of what made Sydow great--all the moody Swedish art films he made in the 50's and 60's, like The Virgin Spring and Through a Glass Darkly. But younger folks don't really know those films and talk about Star Wars or Hanna and Her Sisters, or The Exorcist or any of the dozens of American films he was in. But that's fine as well. He certainly was versatile.

He was a world class actor that could play a hundred different rolls. Too many to mention but I enjoyed him in 3 Days of the Condor, First and second Exorcist. There were plenty of war movies also. He was a pro who had a great career, RIP.
