Not loved by the people. Downright hated in many of the FSR's.
It is my impression that his failure was part inadequacy, but mostly the machinations of the vultures around him, who went on to shape Russia as we see it today. I don't consider him a great statesman, but I don't see him as evil either. He wasn't up to the task, but I doubt if anyone would be.

Dang. Mr. Birthmark bit the dust? Well, he should rest. Don't know much about him other than what went on with Reagan. But what he did was cool for his time. KGB didn't get to him first. RIP.

By 1988, he knew the USSR’s number was up, and he dealt with it in the most reasonable possible way.
Thatcher, Reagan and JPII called the dance, and Gorby did the right moves.
Regardless of anything else, he should be remembered for that.
Yup.

He recognised that the Cold War, arms race and the USSR economy was unsustainable.

The USSR populace was so accustomed to state subsidised salaries and handouts that he was vilified when all of that came to an end.

Unfortunately the “free” economy allowed the rise of the oligarchs. The KGB just evolved into the Russian mafia and Putin’s cronies
