For non-smooth-finished pipes you will find that a discarded tooth brush (wetted with lemon juice, alcohol, coffee, spittle, or any other of the solvents mentioned above) does wonders for getting the gunk out of their cracks and crevices. One is also beneficial for working wax into them, and for subsequent polishing.

Man I'm trying lemon juice. There are times when spit just won't cut the crude. Doesn't appear to be from the pic but did you notice any discoloration afterwards?

uperepik no discoloration, it may be worth mentioning though that after scrubbing with q tips soaked in lemon juice, I did dry the rim and gave it a layer of "briar polish". The tooth brush/lemon juice combination also sounds good. I may give it another go, since there were some spots in between the cracks that didn't come out that good.
