Of course it will get dark if you burn it, care must be taken. Also, it will get dark just from smoking, the smoke will cause tar to build up. I keep a old cotton wash cloth handy, I use it over and over again. I fold it up and put it on top of the bowl and twist it back and forth. Sometimes a bit of spit works well if it's stubborn. I found if I do this after every smoke or so, it really helps keep the lava off. Once it's built up thick, it's a pain to remove. You can avoid burning it but as far as lava goes, not sure that can be avoided, just kept at bay.

I find that using wood matches helps me from burning or discoloring the top of the bowl. Wipe some spit on the top after each smoke and wipe with a cloth or paper towel.

Fill it only to 3/4 full and be very careful when lighting. It's still going to darken somewhat from the smoke and heat. Did you buy it to look at or smoke? My priority by far is smoking, therefore, I don't give much thought to the rim darkening. I view it as a natural consequence of enjoying the pipe. When I own something, my intention is to have it work for me, not vice versa.
