One clear example that anyone with a medium size and another small pipe can do -- most loose tobacco goes well in a medium size pipe, or well enough, but burns too quickly and often doesn't amount to much in a small pipe. Now try some flake in a small pipe. Ah ... full length smoke, and usually full flavor two. Voila, you've entered the world of pairing the pipe with the blend and the cut. That ain't no pish.

I can say from my limited personal experience that certain blends do sing in certain pipes whereas in other pipes they are just a 'smoke'.
Why this is is beyond me but in my experience it is a certainty. For example I heave a James Upshall pipe that really makes McClelland #2015 taste like ambrosia whereas if I smoke the same blend in a particular Parker pipe the taste is markedly different.
Why this is I haven't a bloody clue but it is interesting.
