Came across this video regarding pipe tobacco in the 18th Century. I like this guy's YouTube channel because he normally discusses food from the 18th century but he answered a question regarding pipe tobacco. Skip to 10:45 for the brief discussion.
Is he right or wrong?

He's right as far as twists or ropes being most common. And yes, apparently the ropes themselves were oftentimes pressed.

Twist held up better for some of the rugged travel of the time period especially for those in rural areas. Twist or plug could be put in a pocket or pouch and wouldn't be ground up to dust like a ribbon cut tobacco would.
I subscribe to this youtube channel because it has a lot of information on the lifestyles and cooking from 1720-1800.
