If you ever come through the Portland area, I highly recommend stopping by Rich's Cigar Store. I see online that it shows two locations in downtown Portland, but this post is in regard to the Alder location. I've been to a lot of tobacconists where the atmosphere is off and the staff isn't very knowledgeable on tobacco and pipes. This is not the case here! Great customer service and knowledgeable staff. They have a huge selection of pipes and for good price. When it comes to tobacco, you're better off buying tins online as they are quite pricey. They have quite the variety of house blends, with a focus on aromatics. I prefer tins and English blends, so the only tobacco's I've picked up from there were a 965 match and Bill's Blend (vanilla and armagnac aromatic) which wasn't my cup of tea.

Yeah man. Was there last year. Went to both locations. The original spot, around the corner from Powell’s Books, is incredible. I have never seen so many pipes in one place. I picked up a tin of Wessex Brown Flake, a “Made in Italy” basket pipe, and a Peterson Aran 106.
I spoke with Bill of “Bill’s Blend” fame and he is the codger of all codgers.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I’d keep things together for people looking for a tobacconist in Portland, OR (since 1894).

I visited the Alder location today. Nice shop, relaxed atmosphere, worth a visit. The tins are definitely more expensive than online- but I liked that I could handle them, and read the descriptions. Some shops keep everything locked up and I feel like I’m bugging the shopkeepers to keep asking to look at tins.

Picked up some tobacco and headed out to a local lake for a little fishing, which made for a nice afternoon.

I first went to Rich’s in the early 90’s when I was in Portland on business for Warner Brothers. When I was in Portland for Thanksgiving in 23, of course I made a visit to Rich’s. Had a great time chatting with Bill and walked away with some tins, bulk, and some McClellands that they had tucked away for their regulars.

Nice place. I sometimes go there while visiting my cousin in Vancouver, WA. My most memorable experience was finding an opened box of Fuente 8-5-8 sungrowns in stock and asked if there was a purchase limit. When he said no, i was happy to take 1/2 the box off his hands. Was a nice score that day. Still have a few of those rolling around the humi to this day.
