Yeah, it was an up and down episode. The scalping scene was amazing but it wandered far and wide when Eli went off to smoke opium, get his ashes hauled and question his youth. (And who was the older female lover? She spoke accented English so is there any chance she was was his young Comanche lover?)
But, things definitely got back on track when when Eli's son, Pete, cracked up and drove off to retrieve the body he'd buried in the pasture. Pete has a conscience, a soul and wants to do the right thing in spite of his legendary, overbearing father.
I'm staying with it but I'm a sucker for these sprawling Texas epics. I've read "Giant" twice and watched the movies ten times or better. These stories where men and women put their stamp on the land and then carried it forward through multiple generations always have my full attention.
