The presentation in the tin is something to behold. The flakes are perfectly formed with no frayed edges and sliced very thin. Just handling them gives you the impression that you are handling something fine into which someone, with very exacting standards, put a lot of passion. The smell in the tin is so so nice. Fresh cut hay and timothy come to mind. The flakes are of perfect moisture level right out of the tin, but I have found that this tobacco seems to smoke best for me when fully rubbed and allowed to dry out for a half hour or so. Upon initial light I am greeted by grassy, bright, brassy lemon Va and an edgy spice like black pepper and cinnamon. A few more puffs and a bit of sugar pops up just before I tamp down the initial light’s expansion. 2nd light and subsequent full char brings a very different experience than the initial light. I immediately get softened burnt sugar and the spice has been adjusted to more cinnamon than black pepper but both are still there. Further puffing brings more of the same but this tobacco seems to soften and round out even more. By mid bowl it is yielding classic Va sweet potato pie and buttery toffee and caramel flavours. It is very soft and round at this point and some dried and stewed fruit notes start to combine with the buttery toffee, caramel and sweet potato pie while the spice persists in the background. The spice that was cinnamon and black pepper seems to be developing more into a cinnamon and chilli pepper which tends to sharpen the sweetness of the caramel and toffee topped sweet potato pie flavours. As the spice sharpens, the caramelization seems to continue and the sweet buttery soft notes develop into more concentrated burnt sugar flavours and tar and coal flavours start to appear. Just about now the spice changes yet again. The cinnamon and chilli pepper persist, but the cinnamon sharpens and to it is added a salty cumin edge which goes quite well with the tar and coal flavours that are developing. A bit of clove also seems to emerge and the whole thing sort of combines to take on an incense quality similar to good quality myrrh. The end of the bowl is strong and warm like a good cigar. Not hot, but warm. This tobacco never ever bit me or was even the slightest bit harsh on my mouth or throat. It developed steadily from start to finish and each development was fascinating. Amazing that someone can take some leaves and process them into something that can yield this fine of an experience. Kudos to Fribourg And Treyer...Kudos indeed.

It is a mind blowing tobacco experience for anyone who enjoys straight Virginias. I highly recommend that all Va lovers pick up a tin of this.

Good review. This blend has been a favorite of mine for years now &

is well represented in the cellar. It has baffled me as to why this one

has not been more popular in the US... Vintage Flake, Blackjack (or Negrohead as

it is sold in Europe), Cut Blended Plug, and Wingate are also excellent blends

that are worth the coin.

Well this is my second tin and it has earned a permanent spot in my rotation and is definitely in the running for all time best Virginia flake. I will definitely be cellaring a fair bit of this wonderful tobacco for future use and because I just know that it will age well.

Hey Kevin...can I edit that review? I forgot to rate the tobacco while I was reviewing it and wanted to get back in to do so.

Phil, that was a great review. I'm hoping you'll take the time to review some more blends. I think your palate, insight and communication skills are terrific; and we would all benefit from more of same. BTW, I'm putting a couple of tins of this in a shopping cart as soon as I send-up this post. :puffpipe:

ps. Kevin, I also think the other website needs a reviewer edit function.

Do yourself a favour Bob and get yourself a tin of this stuff. I seem to recall that you are a big Va fan and I can promise you that you will thoroughly enjoy this Va.

Gosh, I doubt that CVP has any topping at all- doesn't taste like it to me. That stuff is fantastic though, and yes, it does take some experience to really enjoy it. It is my favorite Virginia flake at the moment. I will add more to my cellar as soon as I can afford to.

Thanks for a very informative post. I've been trying a variety of Va flakes in the last few months, and this is now one I'll add to the top of my list. I'm always amazed at the flavors that develop with these so called plain jane Va tobaccos.

Wonderful review, thanks again!

I cut my flake teeth on this blend along with a couple of others and I have never felt it was cased with citrus. I don't get any citrus flavors from it. If you want some real citrus try the new Capstan Gold Flake.
The CVP ages incredibly well. I am down to a last tin from 2001 and this stuff turns jet black after a decade and becomes a sublime smoke with that kind of age. I enjoy CVP fresh and smoke it quite often but the aged stuff is really something special.
junk, the nicotine is not noticeable, it is a mild to medium blend. You may have to start calling some small mom and pop stores to get it. Are you on SP's notification list? You might also want to try their Vantage Flake, also very tasty.

Hiplainsdrifter sent me a sweet sample package and this is the one that ruined me. They were all good but CVP is amazing. I definitely need to improve my mom and pop sourcing because I'm already starting to jones for more. Good review but now I want to smoke some CVP!
