I just received my first reverse calabash pipe. It's a Chacom bent apple. It's such an unusual looking pipe and quite small. My initial reaction is it seems to smoke like a much bigger pipe. I don't think it cools the smoke much, maybe a little. I'm really happy with it!

I was just wondering if that's a common reaction; that it smokes like a much bigger pipe than it is?

Thanks

"Lab grade" tests were performed years ago by Anthony Harris, the world's top maker of the design, regarding how large the chamber had to be to actually cool the smoke.

The good news was the concept 100% "works as advertised".

The bad news was the chamber size for the cooling effect to be detectable was around 30cc (if memory serves... maybe it was only 20). Too big for a pipe of normal design to incorporate, in any event.

Double-chambered pipes ARE just the ticket for a DRY smoke, though, regardless of chamber size.

In noticed that too. Much less condensation than on my other pipes

Ok. Makes sense. Well my chacom smokes great and I'm super happy with no condensation! Those are nice looking pipes in the video; bet they're quite pricey.

They cost quite a bit less than people expected, back when he was making them. (Giant blocks of briar are REALLY hard to come by, and know one else could do what he did).

Anthony no longer makes pipes, though, so finding an estate one is your only option.

Here's a scrollable list of photos to whet your appetite / know what to look for if the urge strikes and you ever browse eBay or similar:

Thanks Georged! Very Distinctive looking. Maybe one will turn up in estate pipes one day!
