It finally happened when I went to pick up my parcel at the post office. Revenue Canada had slapped about $150 worth of taxes on a $50 shipment from Pipes and Cigars. I had the post office send it back and contacted Pipes and Cigars. I'm not sure what this will mean for future purchases by me.

That is really bad news. Yet another example of messed up, nanny-state beauracracy and Governments treating tobacco as a 'Cash Cow'.

The only thing I could suggest is that you do like they did during Prohibition (but the other way around). Take a trip to the USA and bring it back yourself via a very lax border route. Either that or start researching how to grow and cure your own tobacco.

Ah the freedoms we have lost. What a bummer. You need to order from a supplier that is used to shipping out of country and knows how to play the game. 4Noggins is the best at this. They do it all the time successfully.

Have a US buddy mail it to you in an unmarked box with some photos or other cheap nonsense that will make it seem like a care package from a friend rather than a circumvention of the law, should you get caught.
Maybe we should set something up similar to the Newbie Sample Trade, only call it the "F**k Revenue Canada Club". We'll have CPS (Canadian Pipe Smokers) and APS (Pipe Smokers who don't live in a socialist dystopia yet  )
so every CPS will have his/her order sent to the APS, who will then repackage it along with some other nonsense to make it seem friendlier, and send it to the CPS.
I'm not sure what the APS will get for the trouble, maybe the CPS can order an extra oz. of something of the APS's choosing? Thoughts?

I just had an idea. Fleabay have a policy of not selling tobacco, yet people do under the guise of selling the tin only and not being responsible for the content of the tin. Maybe that is the way forward.

The only problem with that is that only the vendor is protected; if the amount of tobacco contained within the package is 201g+, or worth more than $20.00CAD, Revinue Canada has their way with you to the tune of approx. 300% value, depending on province (although I've noticed that shipments declaired at less than $30 don't seem to get much attention).

If you are coming up from the U.S., you are allowed to bring back up to 200g ($20.00CAD), or 500g ($50.00CAD) Duty Free tobacco after 48 hours without CRA getting their share; if you try and import 1kg plus, the shipment can be seized without a commercial vendors licence.

Something else to watch out for, its actually illegal to mail tobacco across provincial lines, so be careful if your sending tins to fellow pipe smokers in Canada.
Strongirish and Marm have the right idea here...although I would love to have an APS to go to for blends not available through Rich (STM, H&H bulks etc.) like kf5eqv suggested; I wanted to cellar some BBT Bayou Slice, ended up placing three orders for 3 tins each as shipping was cheaper than duties, but yeah, $40 in shipping sucks too...

I understand people in Washington state have similar problems and can't purchase mail order tobacco from out of state

F**k 'em.

My thoughts exactly. Posted the law about inter-Provincial mailings so no one sends a package to Newfoundland labeled "Pipe Tobacco Samples", and then bitches about it getting nabbed, not because I agree with it, as I've noticed us Canucks getting more involved in, and organizing things like box passes.

Well, first of all, I'm new here, so hello. Second, we're talking about Canada here. This country doesn't have too many friends out there like Canada. They've given us Dan Ackroyd, The Kids In The Hall, April Wine, Barenaked Ladies, HOCKEY...
This country wouldn't have made it through Prohibition without Canadian entrepreneurs. And, being in Texas, I can empathize, since we also share a border with the U.S.
Help Canadian pipe smokers by
necessary supplies and life-saving medicaments past an oppressive revenue department? Count me in.
I'd be happy to help Washingtonians out, too. Y'all are getting screwed.

"F*#k em!"
I remember that attitude,.....exhibited the very one many times in my younger days. Several times it cost me big time.
Often over the years I've wondered how differently my life would have turned out if they'da let me finish the Naval Acadamy,...or for that matter...just my enlistment!
Best of luck to you skatin' around it. I hope you figure something out. :D

This thread scares me! But kf5eqv, I'll let you know before I order some American blends and we can work out a deal. Thanks for volunteering guys! We do have a few amazing tobacconists that blend some great stuff in house, and we can get a good selection of tobaccos from around the globe, but certain blenders find it difficult to sell in Canada because of our crazy taxes.
