I have a couple Nimrod Sportsman's. A truly clever design that doesn't attempt anything but what it is.
There are things that can be done to improve performance. Replacing the gotten wadding, etc. helps. But, nothing works as well as taking the time to completely disassemble the Nimrod and give it a thorough cleaning. I use grain alcohol and Q-Tips along with my set of dentists picks, etc. Replace the gotten wadding with new, Zippo wicks and flints work well.
And, a little mineral oil on all the threaded parts works wonders for both function, and to help seal the lighter fluid in. Nimrods don't have a large fuel reserve and being fairly old those threaded parts get leaky.
But, when I'm out and about with friends and whip out one of my billiards, or one of my Falcons, and fire up a bowl with one of my Nimrods... The looks I get are usually ones of amazement that I'm turning into a "retro ranger", or, they don't recognize the retro and think I've found something new and cool.
