They also make lighters like the nimrod, pretty much same idea but different. I'd like to buy one but I'm afraid it'll be junk. I see them sometimes when I'm looking at lighters on ebay. But the nimrod lighters themselves are not bad. Some even have a compass on the bottom.

My nimrod lighter is kept in a box at the smoking table. I pull it out from time to time, when there is no wind and have the time to play with it. It's definitely not a lighter for the piper on the go.

I have a couple Nimrod Sportsman's. A truly clever design that doesn't attempt anything but what it is.
There are things that can be done to improve performance. Replacing the gotten wadding, etc. helps. But, nothing works as well as taking the time to completely disassemble the Nimrod and give it a thorough cleaning. I use grain alcohol and Q-Tips along with my set of dentists picks, etc. Replace the gotten wadding with new, Zippo wicks and flints work well.
And, a little mineral oil on all the threaded parts works wonders for both function, and to help seal the lighter fluid in. Nimrods don't have a large fuel reserve and being fairly old those threaded parts get leaky.
But, when I'm out and about with friends and whip out one of my billiards, or one of my Falcons, and fire up a bowl with one of my Nimrods... The looks I get are usually ones of amazement that I'm turning into a "retro ranger", or, they don't recognize the retro and think I've found something new and cool.

Well, thanks for the tip Vigil. I puled out some of th wick, which helped some, but I guess a tear down and cleaning would help it out. I like the coolness factor too much!

I have my dad's which I just keep to look at. I don't think it's worth overhauling. I keep it with his Marxman pipe off in their own corner.
