I smoke one bowl in a pipe, and then let it rest, at least a day. I split my pipes between Virginia blends, and blends that contain Latakia. I might go through 5 pipes a day, usually it is more like 3.

I tend to believe letting your pipes rest for a day or two is a good thing. I do have a few pipes I tend to want to smoke all the time though. That is my reason for continually buying more pipes. Eventually I'll have a cabinet full pipes I always want to smoke all the time:)
Maybe at some point I can graduate to levels of quality or quality smokes. I have already started thinking about selling some of the pipes that I don't smoke often.
I might get some pics together and offer them up here.

Wouldn't you think that chemical change you speak of is prolly nothing other than the pipe drying lonered?Just a guess. I could put water in a dry pipe and see if the odor comes back. I will report tomorrow
So, I dampened a cotton ball and wet the bowl of dried pipe. The result was an increase in the intensity of the odor. Although it was not as strong as after use. After a 24hr. drying period, the aroma was much less and more pleasant. Looks like you can tell if a pipe is dried and ready for use by smell. Happy puffing. :puffy:

I guess it's a good thing to let a pipe rest if you want to. I doubt if it's absolutely necessary. Depends on how many pipes you have available to you.

I smoke a pipe for several days, and then run a couple cleaners through it, and put it aside for a while. I have a lot of pipes, so the time it spends not being smoked varies.

Most of my pipes are 20+ years old, and I have never experienced a burnout or sour taste. I guess you can over pamper most anything though. It certainly can't hurt it, and if it makes you feel better, then rest it for 24 hours between smokes.

But think about the 7 day sets. Does that means you're meant to smoke one pipe all day, and then let it rest for 6 days! Rules. Who decides these things?

I say smoke your pipe however you want. I don't think you will hurt it.

If you have never owned/smoked one, you ought to give a clay pipe a shot. Lately, my clay has been my all day pipe, and it is really great because it doesn't ghost, offers a cool, dry smoke, and you don't have to worry about letting it rest. I will fire up that bad boy in the morning, smoke it all the way down, dump out the ashes, set my next bowl out to dry and then load it up again. Its a great smoke, but they are very fragile, so keep that in mind.

Cobs offer the same advantages that clays do as afar as resting goes, but they aren't as fragile. :puffpipe:

I usually smoke two bowls a day, one early morning, and one late afternoon. Same pipe. I'll go along with Colorduke to a point, I do think that the importance placed on resting of pipes, as well as whole rotation mentality has been exaggerated a bit in the last few years. I'm not saying it's faulty thinking, but I got along for a number of years with three pipes, which are still none the worse for wear.

Only 1 pipe? Oh no no no no SIR! You must get MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAR! Take a gander at some of the sponsors. Stop by Ebay and search "Tobacco Pipes", and open your wallet wide my friend.
The madness has just begun.

Being new here, I am astonished to see the extent of care and devotion given to your collective property. I hadn't imagined myself as laid back as I am by comparison. From the start, I have lined up 7 for a week, one pipe for one day. If/when wifey jumbles them to clean around, I will sniff my pick first. Any not ready for service will smell sour.

That deserves to be framed and hung in the man cave. :puffy:
Creative pic. Not sure why it took so long for someone to have the idea and post it!

I smoke one per day and that means 2-3 bowls. Then it sits for a week or so. I have not had any issues with moisture or sour pipes. My guess is you really have to overuse and neglect it to get to the sour stage. If you hang around here long you will become a clean pipe freak so there will be nothing to worry about.
