I say turn and burn cobs with as much or little rest time as you want.
Clean out the the stem and shank with a pipe cleaner, wipe the bowl if needed, and load them up again. Cobs are relatively and still easily found, so replacement is pretty easy.

So different caliber barrel brushes? I suppose if they don't fit at first, they will after a couple of uses. LOL I might try some in the appropriate pipe.

Just curious, is there a downside to having the draft hole a little oversized if you get too zealous?
40 caliber size is what I use. The 40 cal. size will work the first time. I don't understand your last question about the draft hole.

I've found that cobs without hardwood plugs can get soggy on the bottom and need to dry out a bit longer. They do need to dry out for a day or two after, but you don't have to baby them. I've smoked multiple bowls back to back in the same cob without issues.
