Try scrubbing out the stem with bristle pipe cleaners soaked in Oxyclean, or even strong alcohol if that's what you have around. Try a search onsite for cleaning vulcanite stems, lots of tips.

I think I better make a big pot! ?Know any jewelers or have any friends with a table-top buffer? That's the fastest way (if you know what you're doing!) The magic eraser will work too, take a bit more time, so make a pot of Yorkshire tea first!
I don’t have one and I’m not the best at using proper tools without supervision ?Couldn't you just polish it with a polishing wheel? There are cheap polishing wheels for electric drills.
