I wonder if the bushing would act as an internal band. Perhaps, the epoxy applied will seep into the crack—I would think some kind of cushioned band on the outside to keep the crack tight and sealed will be in order while the epoxy cures, then can be taken off afterwards.
That's what I'm thinking - but to turn a phrase from "Red Green", my woman needs to find me handsome because I'm not necessarily handy, lol.

The bushing should keep the crack from spreading if you get some epoxy worked into it. And yes I would tape off the outside of the shank. Hockey tape works pretty well for pipe repair. If the crack doesn’t stabilize you’ll have to band it.

I'm pretty excited!!

Rained all day so finished up the stem with some more Soft Scrub, sanding pads, a little @Chasing Embers toothpaste and a then little bit of oil.

Takeaway -- stem cleaning requires patience!! And . . . . I wouldn't have bet even $5 that I could start with the stem I started with and end up with this beautiful (to me) look.

Last takeaway - the cake was substantial and misleading. I kept fearing discovery of chamber imperfections and other than the aggressive reaming someone did at some point, every time I thought there may be a problem running my finger in there, it was just more cake that needed out, so no burnouts, etc., which I fully expected given the condition of the pipe when I started.

Looking forward to fall!!

What a charming carving! Was that original to the pipe or did someone add that one afterwards?
