In the 1970's Irish Seconds were highly regarded by my colleagues in grad school, blemished Petersons that were sold as $10 basket pipes, not acknowledged as Petersons. They were reputed to be a lot of pipe for the money
I recollect the Tinderbox sold them in my town.
By the time I got to grad school they became Shamrocks, stamped Shamrock a Peterson Product with a "S" not "P" on the stem and migrated out of the basket and on to a display and the price climbed to an astronomical $15 if I recollect correctly. These weren't the current Peterson Shamrock line, but blemished pipes begrudgingly acknowledged by Peterson.
I bought one with money earned as a dorm janitor and still have it, a shape 606 pot.
As I recall it took a long time to break it in but it eventually became one of my favorites.
Any other Irish Seconds or Shamrocks, or other black sheep pipes of the Peterson family still soldiering on out there?
