I congratulate mingc for being brave enough to purchase a tin of Holly's Non Plus Ultra from my website. Not only was it a well aged tin, but one that had been sitting on my shelf for 15 or so years without anyone being brave enough to pull the trigger, meaning it had aged even more. My only concern is that mingc actually smokes some of the contents because my home address is on the payment receipt and mingc now knows where I live. (GULP!)

OK, here goes. I was so scared from reading the reviews that I pulled out my tester corn cob for this for fear of ever contaminating one of my regular herd. But, I liked it!

The mix is well rubbed broken flake and the tin note was very appealing : fermented figs with a very slight citrus note. The tobacco was still pliable and packed and lit easily. Once lit, the predominant note was cherry, and under the cherry, aged Virginia. The smoke was very smooth, commensurate with its age. The topping not over the top. It did not require an inordinate number of relights.

The only demerit was a slight bitter aftertaste when I smacked my tongue. But it was not bitter to the extent of old codger burley, which makes me dump the bowl once past halfway.

If I'm to give credence to earlier reviews that this is the devil's own poop cabbage, the only conclusion I can draw is that age has mellowed this thing out and then some. But for the aftertaste, I'd say I really like it. Maybe the next bowl will be different.

I should say that it's not that I'll smoke everything. There's actually stuff that I don't like. For instance, I should probably give my Cross Eyed Cricket and Autumn Evening away. My Semois too. The last bowl of Haddo tasted like I was chewing aspirin while gargling IPA; bitter, bitter, bitter!

To think that this tin sat on @pipestud's shelf just waiting for me all these years!

@pipestud is either an accessory to a suicide or it's attempted murder.

This is one tobacco i have really wanted to try since starting this wonderful hobby. Right up there with Condor and many other delicious Lakalands where it seems to be a "Love or Hate" situation. Too bad its near to impossible to find as i love all of the unusual tobaccos i have tried so far (Crooner being a favorite among the "weird" category). The funny reviews only add to the building curiosity surrounding Holly's Non Plus Ultra.

Shhhh! ? Too many wagging tongues and @pipestud will charge $300 a tin the next time he gets some!

Had I heard of this blend when I smoked, I believe I would have stayed away. That some haven't and have lived to tell the tale suggests that a power, perhaps God, zapped their noodle!
