I for one am glad that there are new introductions, even if they are re-introductions, and even if the blender tweaks the blend a little.
Russ O., to name just one master blender has kept legions of pipe smokers happy by introducing new mixtures and blends to try: try and love, try and hate, or like me, try, not like, and jar it up to try another day or another season.

The Shell would indeed be a great candidate to reissue (although how faithful it would be is a matter of debate). Actually the Shell appeared at least twenty years earlier than 1959, notwithstanding Loring's table. The tin shown has to date from between 1931-1948; my guess (and it's just that) would be late thirties/early forties.

I've tried unsuccessfully on the bay to pick up Durbar and the Aperitif. I'd sure be interested to try the new versions.

I love the Dunhill blends I smoke, not just for the top-class leaf but for the rest of the experience - the packing and presentation. I'm really excited at the chance to enjoy (or maybe not!) some of the blends I've heard so much about, particularly Durbar and Aperitif. I never knew the 'old' versions so can't make a comparison, but I have to say that doesn't bother me. I intend to experience whatever they reintroduce and assess them accordingly.

As I said earlier in another post on the General Board, I was in the Dunhill Tobacco shop at 1A St James's St today and they showed me the internal docs on this relaunch. Aperitif and Durbar will be back with us at the end of May.

Over the course of my lifetime -- having smoked a pipe regularly since 1980 -- I've had fewer than five individual bowls of tobacco that hit me at just the right time, in the right mood, in the right setting, and delivered exactly what I needed at that particularly point. For me, those were transformative smokes. And a 1999 tin of Durbar is responsible for one of them. Everything aligned at the perfect moment in time to leave a lasting memory of that one bowl.
I don't expect every tin to be like that, of course. But I'll definitely be happy to add more tins of Durbar to my cellar.
