The pipe I was smoking the finish started to bubble. I clean off the old finish with alcohol and a buffing wheel. Can i use a tung oil or a poly finish ? Nothing fancy just a clean good looking finish ! I am thinking it had a lacquer finish from italy

Use hard carnauba wax on the buffing wheel. Don't even think about using polyurethane or tung oil...bad things will happen...

Thanks Zack24 i never thought of wax.... I did read using Feibing leather dye in Alcohol then buffing would work. Sending it out to be refinished would be out of the question.

You may find that once you strip off the lacquer that the finish will be dull and has sanding scratches. The lacquer is meant to hide those scratches and make it shine without a lot of sanding and buffing. Some pipes need a light sanding with 600 & 800 then buffed with white diamond to get a nice shine. Then finish up with the carnauba.

Carnauba is the wax of choice. IIRC, Butcher's is too soft.
But can you please post photos of before and after?
This is a way to add photos to your post:
Once your photos are on a photo hosting site such as Imgur.com, select the image, then Control-click (Mac) or Right-click (Windows) and choose copy image location. Now paste the URL into the box that pops up under IMG in the compose reply window of the thread.
If you want to use the site's album (images tend to be smaller than hosting site's size)

1.) Login

2.) Go to My Account (may have hit Home button first) and mouse down to Album.

3.) Choose Upload Picture (navigate to photo you've given a sensible name to), be sure to then hit Upload.

4.) Go back to Album, click on thumbnail to open full size image. Right click (Windows); Control Click (Mac) and select "copy image location" (its URL).

5.) Return to your reply window in the thread and click on the IMG button at the top of the compose window.

7.) Paste the image location into the window and click OK.

I did try the Butcher's wax finish.. it is ok....sorry no pictures. I still would like to darken the pipe maybe with a dye like I have read with a alcohol mix. What varnish if any can be used ????

Briar,if finished properly does not need any sort of varnish or lacquer to make it shine. The factories use it to hide sanding scratches, fills and poor grain. If you do not have a buffer you can still put a nice shine on your pipes with sandpaper and/or Micro Mesh. Start with 360-400 grit and sand it up to 1000 or 1200 grit using a good quality sandpaper,or 8000 to 12000 using the Micro Mesh. Starting with the sandpaper and finishing with the Micro Mesh would probably be best. The higher you sand it the more it will shine. Take your time and make sure to sand thoroughly with each grit--sand till you think it is smooth, then sand some more, before moving to the next grit. If you stain it you can apply it a couple of times, once after sanding with the courser grits and again at a higher grit.

If sanded properly it will shine quite nicely with just a good coat of wax. If you do not have a buffer to apply carnauba get some Halcyon and Paragon wax. Very easy to apply and a small jar will last damn near forever. Buff with a soft cotton cloth or Micro fiber cloth. Those are the only two waxes, besides carnauba, that I would use on a pipe.

After reading you OP again I see you do have a buffer. Why not get an extra wheel or two and some white diamond buffing compound,it would save some sanding and time. Sand it to 800 or 1000 and buff with the white diamond and it will shine like a new penny before it is even waxed !

Does one wipe with a wet rag to remove dust and raise the grain? Or does the grain of briar not rise when wet? Or is wiping with a damp rag a bad idea anyway?
