Briar,if finished properly does not need any sort of varnish or lacquer to make it shine. The factories use it to hide sanding scratches, fills and poor grain. If you do not have a buffer you can still put a nice shine on your pipes with sandpaper and/or Micro Mesh. Start with 360-400 grit and sand it up to 1000 or 1200 grit using a good quality sandpaper,or 8000 to 12000 using the Micro Mesh. Starting with the sandpaper and finishing with the Micro Mesh would probably be best. The higher you sand it the more it will shine. Take your time and make sure to sand thoroughly with each grit--sand till you think it is smooth, then sand some more, before moving to the next grit. If you stain it you can apply it a couple of times, once after sanding with the courser grits and again at a higher grit.
If sanded properly it will shine quite nicely with just a good coat of wax. If you do not have a buffer to apply carnauba get some Halcyon and Paragon wax. Very easy to apply and a small jar will last damn near forever. Buff with a soft cotton cloth or Micro fiber cloth. Those are the only two waxes, besides carnauba, that I would use on a pipe.
