Just smoked a bowl of KBV's Byronic Slice yesterday, I think Ken's making the best McClelland red matches right now. Strong vinegary/ketchup scent on the nose and smokes great.

Ernie's Rouxgaroux is the other iconic current production red.

McConnell's Red Virginia is also a blend I really like, there's a bit of added perique to mimic aging a pure red, and it's cased with a very faint chocolate. Absolutely delicious. (I almost wanted to gatekeep this one for myself)

Watch City makes a bunch of blends with Red Va's as the base, in addition to Rouxgaroux, there's English Ernie-ental, Simply VaOriental, but if you're just looking for straight Va, here's hoping their Simply Red will have at least one more release.

Side question: What is the flavor profile of red Virginias? And what are the other kinds of Virginias and their flavor profiles?

Yes, the most distinctive Reds, to me, have a dominant acidic tanginess with an underlying semi-sweet dough-y-ness. Sometimes the tanginess morphs into hints of vegetal notes (as in Edisto). Sometimes there are dark fruit notes, but they're minor in Reds, and different than the kind you get with a brown VA.

Yellow or bright VAs are either good or they aren't. I know that's true of all leaf, but I feel it's especially polarizing in Yellow VA. The not good stuff has a way of quickly turning ashy and cigaretty. However, the good stuff tastes like semi-sweet fermentive silage, or else relatedly hay or grass. It can be like a freshly mown lawn, or else like a sweet hay loft, or else like a silo, all depending on the leaf.
Many people also mention lemon notes, but I don't think I've ever tasted this in a tobacco. Not sure why I don't get that one.

Brown VA Flakes are my favorite. They can have sweet, dark fruit notes, like Christmas pudding, figs, dates, raisins, with a sweet bread (or more like sweet bread dough) character supporting. Sometimes there are also quasi-carmelized notes in there too, or toasted marshmallow. To me these seem the most complex and the most varied.

Red VAs are my favorite leaf. One aspect not mentioned yet is spiciness. Good reds are spicy even without perique.

Favorites include CRF, Cringle Flake, Sutliff 515 RC-1 and HU My Red Fox.

Sutliff 515RC1 and Red Virginia Ribbon are really good. They are very different blends and I would lean toward favoring Red Virginia Ribbon over the 515RC1 if I had to choose. I also have a few tins of Red Virginia Kake but i haven't been able to fully appreciate it. I find it bland and too sweet. I will let some time in the tins pass and see what happens later.

I have some Cringle Flake from 2022 and 2024 in the cellar waiting to be opened. Closer to Xmas I am excited to open a tin of 2024 and see what it is all about.
