Over a year ago I began a search for molasses flavoured pipe tobacco and I received very few leads.
I did, however, learn that chewing tobacco is often prominently flavoured with molasses. Especially Red Man.
I was curious, but I put it on the backburner because I didn't want to play with fire and get addicted.
Last week, I decided to give it a shot AND make sure that I never formed a habit in the process.
Enter Red Man Plug - the only chewing tobacco I can procure locally.
The 40g plug was smaller than I imagined, though of course it is quite compressed.
The flavour was not quite as molasses-forward as I hoped, but it was nice enough with a strong taste of raisins.
It was obviously sweet and sticky and one dimensional.
First problem: incredible burning sensation the first time I tried a small bit... I spit it out and decided to try again later.
I cut off a small amount of some plug the next day and popped it into my mouth before I went for a walk. There was no burn this time and the experience was pleasant enough. It wasn't long though, especially as a nicotine lightweight, before the nicotine made itself known and I was feeling a hearty buzz.
After awhile the flavour was gone, my heart was beating pretty fast, and the chaw had been thoroughly crushed by my jaws so I spit it out and finished up my trek. I wasn't nauseous but I was well aware that I had consumed a lot of nicotine.
I had another small portion before I began work on some outside chores. Again, the experience was alright - nothing too extreme but I was definitely feeling it!
That evening I had a few drinks. That was probably where I got too big for my britches. I had two or three generous helpings of chew after I had finished consuming my alcohol - generally I chewed the flavour out of it and reloaded over the span of several hours. I never got too dizzy and I never got sick, but I basically sprung out of my alcohol buzz with a large dose of nicotine... (FYI I am a 1-2 bowl per day pipe smoker, with days off)
So my experience with Red Man Plug was fairly decent. Until the next day.
Can you say dry mouth, irritability, anxiety, irregular heartbeat, slight dizziness, and a general fatigue?
It wasn't terribly intense, because I functioned all day but it was unpleasant as hell.
Guess what? It carried over into the next day...
48 hours after touching any chew, I'm still reeling from the withdrawal. Is that to be expected? I didn't think I was being moderate, by any means, but I didn't think that it'd have such a strong lasting effect after a day's use. I'm going to fire up my pipe now, and hope to ween myself off this slightly sick feeling...
Anyway, I've shown myself that chew is no joke and that it is pretty tough to use recreationally unless you've got nerves of steel and you can limit yourself to occasional taste once a month or something like that.
The thread discussing addiction somewhat compelled me to post, because unless you are smoking super strong blends at a frequent basis then it is pretty hard to make pipe tobacco as addictive as chewing tobacco... I'm glad that I tried it, but I wouldn't especially recommend it and I would rather stick to my pipes any day. (Even though I enjoyed the novelty of it - I would never want a habit that made you this sick after a day's use and was so rough on your mouth)
I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on Red Man Plug (or loose leaf) and the effects of chewing tobacco in general. No judgment from me on whether you like it or hate it - I can see the reasons why people would be attracted or repelled by it - I am just curious...
