I'm officially now out of acquiring the old SG tins. It was worth the experiment to discover the risks, but the last couple I've acquired in a couple of different blends have been perfectly safe and beautiful in color, but so darn dry, they are like little bonfires and I have no interest in moisturizing, haha. It is kind of fun to mix ultra crispy Grousemoor with "fresh" but I honestly enjoy the fresh more! Love the dogs on the old tins without the hazard warnings, so will keep those but just to look at when done with them.

Hmm? A tin of Westmorland l opened after having it for 5 and 1/2 years is a bit moist.

So long as you’re not cellaring for the long term that will probably work but I wouldn’t trust several hundreds of dollars worth of premium tinned tobacco to not turn to mummy dust in a drawer somewhere over the course of years. Brrr, that gives me the Wiggins just thinking about it. 😬
Yeah, well it's 6 tins so it's not something I lose sleep over. I'll do something about it soon enough.

I’ve had zero issues with storing Gawith tins (from either company) for over 20 years. Look at it this way: How much moisture really can be lost over time when so many here complain about how wet their SG flakes are when they open a tin?!

However, I’ve been playing around with recent-production tins, which were factory sealed to be less troublesome to open, and these can be opened by hand if you really try. They are still vacuum sealed. But when the manufacturer itself has clarified here that they are not sealing for long-term cellaring, it makes sense to jar these blends within a couple of years of manufacturing. I don’t know when the new approach started, but it’s just within the last few years. Any tins older than that, I personally wouldn’t worry about; I’ve never had any issues with square or rectangular tins. (My oldest would have been in the cellar maybe 25 years. And the tobacco inside was fine.)
