Recommended Cavendish for the New Guy

Can anyone suggest a nice cavendish, as a new guy I would appreciate hearing your recommendations.

Do you mean in a blend with other tobaccos, or a one-leaf Cavendish? Are you looking for aromatic or non-aro? What's your pleasure? There are plenty of good plain black unflavored blending Cavendish that can also be smoked by themselves. People can probably come up with better suggestions if you give a few specs on what you are looking for.

so I have been smoking Lane BCA and McClelland VBC, they are black. I like the way they smoke down in the bowl, easy to pack. And, they seem to be very smooth. I have been topping them off with a bit of Nightcap to start off the bowl. I don't really care too much about added fruit flavors etc, but I do like the similar flavor that the two have and was wondering if there are other blends that I should try.

Lane Dark Red is a great Cavendish. McClelland Navy Cavendish is a great tasting tobacco that is more tobacco forward but be sure to watch a video or two on YouTube about prepping flakes.

McClellend's Navy Cavendish will be too hard to pack if you're just beginning. What do you like about the mixture of Nightcap with the Lane BCA or McClellend's VBC? Is it the added strength? I find black cav to be way too light for my preference and it burns the crap out of my mouth because I puff to hard trying to get some flavor out of it. A good one too is Peter Stokkeby Luxury twist flake, it has some added strength with big flavor.

Yes for the strength, and I completely see your point about cavendish being light. I like to smoke 2 to 3 bowls a night and one of them is usually just nightcap by itself.

I like to mix C&D Burley Flake 1 (rubbed out) with just about any aromatic and I let it sit for a few weeks. The Burley Flake will pick up the top note of whatever you put it in. The Burley Flake adds loads of great strength. Also I've heard of folks mixing Five Brothers as well. Burley is a nice leaf in general for adding strength.

Captain Black Regular and/or Lane 1Q, personally I think they are the same, just a different label for marketing and sales, Lane BCA would also be a good choice but I am partial to CB

Cavendish is a process, not a leaf or blend. It could be natural or flavored with any topping. The ones you like are flavored with vanilla. Lane's BCA is probably the most ubiquitous of pure-vanilla cavendish blends as it has been sold for years by countless B&M's relabelling it under their house brand. I find it makes a fine mixer in small quantities with a wide variety of other blends ranging from VA's to VA-Pers to English and even to other aros. I mixed it in with GLP's Virginia Cream (an excellent vanilla-topped blend) to tame its vicious bite. I also mixed it with Royal Yacht to finish out the last of my tins when the taste of RY began to grow unpleasant to me. BCA has saved many blends from having to toss them in the garbage. I have occasionally smoked it by itself, but I find it way too mild for my liking.

Amphora Black- is a pretty complex black cavendish mix- not so mild and comes with Virginia in it

I rather enjoy Drew Estates Toasted Black Cavendish. By itself, it isn't terribly outstanding, but enjoyable. It also mixes quite nicely with anything I've tossed it in with thus far (Lane HGL, Peter Stokkebye Vanilla Creme, Cornell & Diehl Berry Good).

Once again, I suggest McConnell Glen Piper. It has got that old timey cavendish taste.

My favorite cavendish blend is a mixture of golden and black, called 24karat - it's a signature blend made by some guys at Pipe World, in Austin TX. They are listed in the "Pipe store locator" tab should anybody be curious ..

Captain Black Dark is a mild, pruney black cavendish that's a nice sweet mixer that's a forgiving smoke on its own, for those holiday occasions when two-or-more drinks are involved. It's room note is sweet and friendly, another one that solicits more positive comment. It's pretty much what you get with Lane BCA, though I perceive more vanilla, more pluminess ... though that could be in my head. ::
