As my palate continues to develop, I’ve come to really love G L Pease Bankside (my favorite!) and Escudo Navy Deluxe. What are similar blends that I should try out?

Thanks in advance for all the suggestions!

Can you clarify what you mean by “similar,” since the blends you mentioned aren’t all that similar to me?

One is a spun cut, one a flake; one has latakia, one doesn’t; one has dark-fired Kentucky, the other doesn’t. I’m not seeing what’s connecting them for you.

I’ll be honest, I’m not sure either. That’s why I am asking you guys. Lol. I’ve tried all sorts of blends and these two just seem to be the ones I prefer, particularly the Bankside.

I don’t have the most sophisticated palate. My personal reviews in my head tend to go something like “Ugh. Good.” Or Ugh. Bad.” Or “Ugh. Okay.” But these two blends I feel like I can taste different things and are just fantastic to smoke.

I figured if there was some recommendations in the general area of blends, I might could increase my batting average. I’ve got a lot that I don’t care for much and only a few that I totally dig.

I can't think of anything with a flavor profile like Bankside. I love Pease but Bankside I truly disliked.
As far as Escudo goes PS Luxury Flake is a clear standout.

Both are pretty popular blends that shouldn't be in any danger... but you never know. I'd just buy more of them. :)

That's how I am with wine. I've taken wine tasting classes, but still couldn't tell you more than "I like this one" or "nope, not this one."

Bankside Components: Virginia, Latakia, Perique, Dark Fired Kentucky

Try some Dark-Fired Kentucky on its own Mac Baren HH Dark-Fired Kentucky is good as is their Bold Kentucky
An English/Scottish Blend that has some of the same components in different measure is C&D Bayou Night

Escudo Components: Virginia, Perique = Vaper
one a lot like it is (some say interchangeable) Peterson De Luxe Navy Rolls and another somewhat similar but with the addition of black cavendish is Davidoff Flake Medallions.
There are tons of great VaPers and lots of different cuts you might want to explore small 2 oz bulk options on SP and let you tastes decide...

I can't match these; I haven't tried them. But it sounds like you should also try something with burley in it, but starting fairly mild. Burley used to be mostly the base for codger blends, but C&D and others have picked it up as both a base (larger proportion of a blend) or a condiment in premium blends.

Maybe try a pouch of Sir Walter Raleigh, either regular or aromatic, and maybe Amphora Burley. At least you will know if this is something you'd like to explore or you can cross it off your list for now.

This message has been brought to you by the Burley Lovers Association ...not really, but in a way.

I can scratch burley off already. Too cigarette-y. I’ve tried most of the codger blends besides granger and bokhum riff. SWR is alright as is Captain Black but H&H and Velvet are not that swell.

I think maybe it’s the Virginia and Perique that I like. Both blends have those two tobaccos. I also like Latakia so that’s maybe why I like Bankside.

This has been very helpful for me to think about the blends. Thank you. Listing the components made a huge difference. I’m not sure why I didn’t think to do that.
