Interesting that a number of serious pipe smokers consider pipes to be a poor investment. I will take that to heart. I mostly just don't want to lose a bunch of money on a hobby. A bit OT, but regarding high end gear, whether it be pipes or fly rods or skis, functionality should be a driving force in purchase decisions, unless you are just trying to be pretentious. I mean, I have used some friends' higher end fly rods and they are very impressive, but I can haul in 25 inch pigs just as easily with a Cabelas rod- and when I thrash it around in the bushes, maybe even break off an eyelet, I am not going to cry myself to sleep. What I really gravitate toward is value- something that is very well-made for the money, whether anyone else knows it or not.

Currently I am fishing an old Heddon bamboo rod, a 3 piece 5 weight that is 8'6"... Within the next couple of months I will be buying a 7'6" bamboo likely an old Thomas and Thomas, or a Hardy. The rods they made in the 60's can be had for a decent price, and like pipes there is nothing wrong with that vintage. I have several top of the line graphite rods from St. Croix, Diamond Back, Scott, and Sage but they just do not have soul.

Vintage gourd calabash pipes are an investment. I have a 70's Pioneer I picked up for $60 and I had it appraised, they said because they are not easy to get they could be worth upwords of $700 to the right collector. The biggest thing is finding proof of its maker as many don't have markings.

I'd say Dunhill as well. I hear they're very well made and have never heard of one being a bad smoker. Typically they get a good-great review on how well they smoke. The Sherlock Holmes series of pipes from Peterson also is a popular one that a lot of people look for. I think it's partially due to the fact that the name Sherlock Holmes is involved, but I've also heard just about all the pipes in both series' are good-great smokers.
