I’m looking to spend some tax refund money and would like some opinions on factory and artisan pipes. Realistically I’m looking for something sorta different than just Pete’s and sav’s . Also I’m open to pushing the limit to like $300.any help at all is appreciated.

Ultimately it will depend on your taste but that's a healthy budget so you have a large selection.l to choose from.

Personally I would look for an estate to help take that kind of budget further.

It would help of you provide some ideas of your tastes or even some examples in terms of aesthetics.

New or Estate ?

Most of the Forums sponsors have search functions that will allow you to set a price limit

Without knowing your tastes in pipes it is difficult to make a recommendation

There are artisan pipes and meers that will come within your $200-300 limit

Al Pacia is in Italy but I think its 10-15 bucks to ship a pipe to the US and they arrive literally in days.

They have an amazing collection and more Ser Jacopo pipes at varied prices than most.

In the US you dont pay VAT

For around $300 you can get two nice Barlings, or you can get a nice Seder from Kraig Seder @ Sedercraft. He does commission work and occasionally has some for sale on his site. He mostly focuses on the Danish Style, but also makes beautiful Bings.

I would suggest seriously considering an estate piece from a reputable dealer. You could double your value buying an estate, get a $400 retail piece for $200, (aproxamently). Sometimes even better than half off on estates. If you look around you could get a nice old Charatan for $200. Find one you like and ask questions.

I do personally advocate estate pipes also. Some folks are hesitant but most my collection is estates.

That is one reason I have no petersons or savs. For the cost of a midrange Pete I can get a Ser Jacopo or better yet a Kai Neilen estate. Ive a good number of Kai pipes I picked up for less than 170. They are more plentiful in the EU but you get the idea. Most my SJ estates were 160 or less.

I'd advise not overpaying on your taxes and letting the gov't have free use of your $ and then returning some to you after inflation has taken it's course over the year - but I buy Peterson pipes... ;)

I second Al Pascia. A couple of years ago I got a nice Radice from Milan to Michigan in 4 DAYS. Landed cost $180

Smoking Pipes website will let you select new pipes or estate pipes then on the left put in your price range. You will get a lot to select from the different vendors they carry and that would be one starting point. Then check out our sponsors on the left of this page as previously mentioned.

How about a nice GBD or Comoy’s estate pipe and a couple of cobs or some tins of tobacco? That would be in the $200 range.

Where do you get your estates in France, by the way?
