Hi,
Having just started smoking, I find it a bit overwhelming trying to decide what to buy. I am unable to visit a B&M due to not having one in my city and thus have to order online. Currently I am smoking Captain Black White, but am interested in recommendations on other non-drug store brands. Any recommendations would be grateful.
Thank you.

Welcome aboard. First thing you may want to do is get a cob or two for blend testing purposes. They're inexpensive, decent smokes and can take a real beating and still perform.

Next, peruse the sponsors sites here and see what kind of sample packs they offer. For a few bucks you can get enough samples to cover the gamut.

Check out www.tobaccoreviews.com as there are thousand's of blends to read about.

You'll get suggestions from other members but Lane's 1Q will surely be the most popular response. Its one of the best selling blends in the world. Everyone knows it and everyone carries it. Its a mild aromatic ut a good starter.

The resources here are tremendous ranging from the members to the articles by masters like Greg Pease.

Take your time and enjoy youself here.

Aloha NB....Welcome to the forum....The advice above is all excellent. Many of the 'etailers offer a sample pack of blends so that you can try numerous options without investing too much cash. Most importantly....Take your time.... :puffy:

Buy an ounce of perique from pipesandcigars.com and smoke it all in one sitting trying to inhale as much as you can and swallow every 5th mouthful of smoke... 8O
just kidding, welcome to the site! And all the above is great advice, but don't shy from blends with latakia in it either, there's great stuff to be had in those blends.

Don't limit yourself to aromatics. Try a bit of what ever strikes your fancy. Our advertisers here are excellent to deal with.

There are many tobaccos that are great tobaccos. Dont pigeonhole yourself into just one kind of tobacco. Try Virginias, try Burleys, try Latakia, try aromatic, but whatever you do, LEARN TO SMOKE CORRECTLY. Take slow, gentle sips. If you see any real volume of smoke when you blow the smoke out, youre smoking too fast. Using this technique will help you appreciate the flavor of the tobacco a lot more, and whats better, it wont scorch your tongue.

Yeah I'd say sampler packs from some of the sponsor sites is a good idea, and definitely mix it up. Make sure you check out some aros, english/latakias, periques, etc. It's good to give them all a try and see what you like.

If you have some different blends at your disposal (like a sample pack), smoke a couple back-to-back. Like an aromatic (like Captain Black) followed by an English. Even the newbiest noob will be able to tell the difference. :)
Try to learn a bit about the basic tobacco varieties and cuts. Then when someone tells you to
Buy an ounce of perique from pipesandcigars.com and smoke it all in one sitting
, you'll be in on the joke.
But seriously, try something with perique in it. It might not be for you, but then again it might be.

Thanks for all the replies. Never thought to try and get a sample pack. The review sites will give me enough to read over for the next couple of days till payday when I can place an order.
