Gents,

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted here.

After a hiatus I am back into it, and have remembered why I like latakia blends so much. Whereas I previously bought blending tobacco and made my own blends, I don’t really have the luxury anymore and now have to rely on commercial blends.

I recently obtained sample packs of English Luxury and Squadron Leader.

I found English Luxury to be a pleasantish, cool and dry smoke, but something in there put me off. A topping? I don’t know. I got a whiff of musk and kerosene and neither suited my palate, and generally it wasn’t strong enough. Found myself wanting to puff more and more just to go look for the flavours.

Squadron Leader was a far more pleasing smoke, although it had something bitey which at first bothered me (perhaps the sugars in the cavendish that tend to burn hotter?) but later on was tolerable. I found I could probably smoke this all day and not tire of it.

Now here’s the crux. I don’t smoke all day, I smoke a few times a week. When the weather suits, and time permits, etc. At such times, I want a tobacco strong enough to not leave my hunting for flavours, and I want to be satisfied after a bowl. SL doesn’t quite give me that.

I’m thinking something similar to Squadron Leader, but with a bit more prominent latakia, and generally somewhat stronger.

Being in Australia my options are limited and tobacco is eye-wateringly expensive (around USD100 for a 50g tin) so I cannot really go out and test a whole bunch of them.

It seems like I will be able to get Early Morning Pipe, and Nightcap. Would either of these be similar to what I described, or can you recommend me something else that I could then try and track down?

I would appreciate your responses.

Thank you all.

I have read much about Mr Pease’s blends but have unfortunately not been able to find any.

Consensus seems to be that Nightcap is a contender? I’ll see if I can get a sampler before getting a full tin.

The Proper English might be attainable, I’ll ask the tobacconist as they stock other Stokkebye offerings.

What are your thoughts on the EMP? My only concern with Nightcap is the perique, which I have very limited experience with.

The perique in Nightcap is not strong. It's mostly a condiment.

You can't go wrong with 965 either. I suggested Nightcap because it seemed you were wanting a lot of Latakia.

EMP might be too light for you, given what you originally wrote.

Just closing the loop on my kerosene comment on the English Luxury. I just had a bowl with the last of the sampler pack, which tasted quite nice again, except for the topping which I don’t love. No kerosene-ish smell at all. I think, after the few humid days we had, that particular pipe wasn’t quite dry and maybe verging on going sour.

I wasn’t satisfied after that bowl but not angry either ?

North Georgia mountains.
1) Rattrays 7 Reserve
2) English Oriental Supreme
3) Robert McConnell Oriental Square

These 3 have been in my regular rotation for some time now. If you've never tried, these are some quality blends that are usually in stock and affordable.
Enjoy!
