The reason for the title is that the pipe was not a commission but a request that the artist make me a pipe of a unique design based on prior purchases at his shop. Few of us have had the privilege to select the grained faced off block as a start. I knew that he did repairs but never observed the complete process of shaping. Unusual was the only sanding disks were used. The draft hole was completed after final sanding by eye using a hand drill, I was amazed the result : dead on. Next the step down bit. Natural only wax finish to highlite the grain. $165.00 later the pipe was mine. The price was not a favor to me as he has several hand mades for sale in the same range. I will not mention the maker for selfish reasons. The picture speaks for itself.

I love that simple clay pipe shape, never would've thought that it suits briar that well but for me this works like a charm. Great grain, too! I think that protruding and edged "knob" gives the pipe something special, it would seem much more generic without it. Is that "knob" functional or merely aesthetic?
The protrusion is functional as a finger hold balance because the long length and large size. The square shank helps also.
