Really Strange Tobacco Cellaring Question

I've just started jarring & cellaring and have a strange question about location.

We have a non-working refrigerator that has been hiding in a dark corner of the basement and forgotten about.

It's clean w/ no odors. Could I use that as a cellar for my jars? Or is that fact that the door seals make it problematic? It won't be plugged in,(doesn't run anyway)so nothing will be refrigerated.

Just thought I could repurpose it for something else.

Nothing strange about that question as far as I'm concerned. If you are keeping your tobacco in glass jars and tightly sealed it should make a perfect storage space. The temperature will be pretty stable in hot or cold and it will be shielded from any light source.

Unless I see someone post a negative reaction to your idea, you just gave me a great place to store my cellared tobacco. Also, now I have a reason not to dispose of the broken refrigerator.

Maybe you could dress it up with some wood or paint, I have one in my basement and thinking of doing the same thing. It might be time to get my pipes and tobac out of the utility closet.

It's a small fridge, like one for an apartment.

I forgot the Cu. Ft. It's about 4 ft. tall.

I'm thinking I'll start looking for non-working fridges.

Maybe get one for each tobacco genres ::
@ rothnh: I already washed it w/ Odo-ban & water

(Odo-Ban is a disinfectant used in the health care industry.

You use 5oz to a gallon of water)

I didn't think of the Damp-Rid, though.

Do I leave it in when I start using the fridge?

Or should I leave a box of baking soda like we do in the food fridge?

Would it bother the tobacco?
@ lockdown: I don't "need to dress it up" - It still looks good.

It just doesn't work & forgotten about for about 3 years.

I don't see why not. A temperature-neutral place of storage is ideal. The darkness is better than light.
