While whales are always around, this has happened in Chile, this has been a curiously active summer for marine mammals in this area. Whales, dolphins and porpoises have been seen even on the beaches of the province of Buenos Aires, which is incredibly unusual.
The humpback whale could have killed him by hitting him or sinking him to a point where he could not have returned to the surface alive, but it could not have swallowed him. A man cannot go down its throat.Note that whale spit the man out.
Do whales have self awareness and a conscience?

How intelligent are whales and dolphins? - Whale & Dolphin Conservation USA
Over millions of years, the bodies, brains, sensory systems and intelligence of whales and dolphins have evolved for living rich and varied lives in water.us.whales.org
The story of Jonah and the Whale was always followed by a pretty Sunday school teacher using the example of James Bartley to some very sharp kid, who was destined to become in his own time, an elder in the Christian Church.

That accomplished, the pretty Sunday school teachers moved on to Joshua from Jonah.
Or Daniel in the lion’s den.
There is shocking biblical illiteracy today, because of a severe lack of those pretty Sunday school teachers, you know ?
I wonder how few children ever hear about Jonah today?
So I wonder why he bothered?it could not have swallowed him. A man cannot go down its throat.
So I wonder why he bothered?
That would be my guess . It was in a rambunctious ,Whales and dolphins exhibit human like behavior. The simplest expiation is it was playin with the human on a raft.

When my kids were younger, we scheduled a swim with dolphin tour. We were all geared up in our scuba suits and waiting on the pier for the boat from the previous tour to return to take us out. When the boat rushed back in, they were carrying this guy just covered in blood and holding big patches of skin on him by hand. They cancelled our tour... only explaining that the dolphins weren't in a good mood that day, ha ha. We went back to our room and looked it up, and many of these tours end up in chaos, because dolphins are wild unpredictable animals. We don't know what sets them off, but they have rows of razor sharp teeth that can F-you up in a heartbeat.
The tour guides will always blame the customers, but the reality is that it could be anything from what shampoo someone in the tour used to an arm gesture one would make that sets them off. They have no idea what it is... but these places still continue to take tourists' money.
Now, if I am swimming out beyond the breakers, which I wouldn't do on purpose, and if I see dolphins, I hurry my ass back towards the beach. F them dolphins. Ha ha.
may have mistaken him for a school of fishSo I wonder why he bothered?
Happens to me at the Pharmacy all the damned time.may have mistaken him for a school of fish

It wasn't that long ago that along the EU coasts, Killer whales were just tearing fishing boats to smithereens. The experts were saying that parent whales were teaching their offspring to tear up boats. Ain't NO WAY I'd be tooling about in that area in a small boat.I have zero desire to go out on the ocean . Cruise ships , whale watching , commercial fishing----no thanks........
It seems a little creepy to see videos of people in a small open boat marveling as a 30-40 ton whale nudges them . They could flip the whole craft over in a heartbeat & then play tail badminton with the passengers....
The water is their territory............
It happens all the time that people here in Comodoro Rivadavia or Rada Tilly go kayaking or paddle boarding, moving 2000 meters or more away from the beach. Full territory of the Southern Right Whale or the Orcas. This type of encounter happens quite often. Not that it swallows them, but whales that emerge from under kayaks or boats, or that hit people while jumping.I have zero desire to go out on the ocean . Cruise ships , whale watching , commercial fishing----no thanks........
