Hi everyone, first of all I'm sorry if that topic shouldn't be here.

I have several old smoking pipes from my grandfather. Among them, I found this, I was searching the internet and I found something in this forum, so I am here.
I read it was asbestos. I am from Spain I have no idea about smoking pipes and here there is no information about these pipes.

I know that you are experts here, and I would appreciate any information. I would like to know if this pipe is made of real and original asbestos, and I would also like to know if it is really allowed to sell these objects with this kind of material.

Thank you very much for your time, have a nice day.

These are real asbestos, and come up for sale occasionally. One was sold at auction recently here in the UK, and was then re-listed pretty quickly (I suspect the person hadn't realised what it was). So I presume you can sell them in the UK, auction houses are pretty well versed in what you can legally sell. I wouldn't smoke it though!

The commercial sale and use of any asbestos products was banned in the UK in 2000, alot of houses still have tons of the stuff floating around . Generally fine if you leave it well alone .
Exactly. Ripping out asbestos that was already installed does nothing. Asbestos does cause mesothelioma. I wouldn’t think of smoking an asbestos pipe.

Ripping out asbestos that was already installed DOES possibly create problems because it could create the fine dust particles that could get into your lungs. If it is already installed and is sealed, the dangers are not as great. As for an asbestos pipe, I would think that since it is sealed into form the dangers of it breaking apart and creating asbestos fiber would be low. That being said, I wouldn't smoke one.

By the way, if you ever have the chance to look at the data for wood, many different wood species have health risks associated with them if you breath in the dust from sanding or working the wood.

Years ago I lived in a shared house which had stacks of it behind the shed. My friend thought it was hilarious to repeatedly kick it as hard as he could.

I think an exemption was made for second-hand goods from what I could find out.

That’s what I meant. I should have said leaving it alone is better than the potential effects of ripping it out and creating dust.

Asbestos particulates generated when asbestos is broken, sanded, or sawed, etc., can cause scarring of the lungs when inhaled, asbestosis, and also a distinct kind of cancer, mesothelioma. So it is not to be trifled with. I wouldn't own the pipes that could conceivably become broken or crushed. They are an interesting collector's item, but I wouldn't collect them, or own them at all.

Asbestos was used for pipes before the mesothelioma cancer risk was know Because it is highly heat resistant. DO NOT SMOKE IT! In fact, I would not handle it or own it. Do not sell it.

That’s the point as long as asbestos fibres are sealed it won’t do no harm. But I also wouldn’t smoke it. Nevertheless if you’re a pipe collector that one might be the missing piece. And why shouldn’t you sell it?

Asbestos has a distinct shape that results in mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer. It is most dangerous when being removed because the particles are in the air and can reach the lung. Even if it has been sealed, I would NOT consider it safe to smoke!! In fact, I would be concerned having it in my home.

Do not sell it, as the future buyer may not know the risk. I for one could not sell it to another person in good conscience.

If you want a museum piece, fine. But seal it and mount it so that it will not cause harm.

i would guess that selling a new one or not listing what it is made of would be a no no. But who knows might be 100% legal to make and sell them. Somethings that seem illegal aren't especially when it's so obvious that there is no need or civil concerns do the job. (the lawsuit waiting to happen effect). But who knows. Though it would be illegal to ship it to the U.S.A..

I don't even know you are going to smoke it, but it probably wouldn't kill you. Still, I don't think most of us here would like to smoke it, except a hardened few. Asbestos is not something that you should necessarily be around too much.

This is correct. Asbestos is only hazardous when it is friable. I would have no qualms about smoking one of these pipes.
