Kris, I know exactly what you mean. The problem is that the pipe is nearly impossible to clean without disassembling. And, the reality of the situation is that it's one of my best English smokers, so good that I would smoke it 10 or more times a day. I want to put the pipe to good use, but fear that using it as is will cause me unwanted frustration when it comes to cleaning the pipe. It builds moisture very quickly, and if I could easily pass a pipe cleaner, no problem. Alas, this is not the case. That said, if it was your Grandad's pipe, and you loved to smoke it, but found it frustrating, what would you do? I kindly ask for your opinion on the matter.

Follow your heart, man.
( I suppose you could as the question "What would my Grandad do?" Smoke a patched up heirloom that smokes really nice or get it fixed up real good?)

If it was my grandfather's pipe and was broken and I enjoyed smoking it, I would get it repaired so I could thoroughly enjoy it and potentially pass it on to my kids and grandkids. But, that is what I would do. Everyone has their own opinion on what they would do. I feel it would do my grandfather's memory justice to smoke a pipe that he did and have it look as close to original as possible.

I believe I'll have it restored. Like you say revs, I enjoy it, and I'd like to get as much enjoyment out of it as possible. This simply won't do if I keep getting tobaccy juice in my mouth cause I can't run a pipe cleaner through it with the stem attached, and I can't re-attach the stem with out tape.

hey jerod, you could have your granpals pipe banded at the shank where the crack is by a pipe repairmen, this will allow you to take the stem out for cleaning purposes. if you did not know, you can get all the info on refurbing your pipe right here on the forum. iam a new member here again, i was band from this forum back in march which i regret. if you have any questions on refurbs you can contact me or get all that info right here, what ever you want to do.you have a nice collection of pipes. keep trying diff tobacs. i have been on the pipe for ~ 35 years and still try many tobacs. oh yeah welcome.
take care.

mike.

Welcome back Jerod, Got some great pipes, Get your grandfathers pipe repaired, and when you smoke it you can have your "time" with him since you didn't get to know him...I'll be a great tribute.
Looking forward to more post and pics when you get your grandfathers pipe fixed!

Welcome back Jerod. That is a nice collection you have going there. If I had a chance to smoke one of my grandfathers pipes, I would do what ever it took to make it perfect and enjoyable to smoke. I got into pipe smoking long after mine was dead and have no idea where his pipes went.

Welcome back Jerod! It's good to have you here and it feels like you were all along. I really like your collection. My first briar was an Eriksen too and it's a great English smoker. I personally like that small dainty Dr. G but I'm a fan of smaller pipes.

I would get your Grandpa's pipe repaired and pass it on when the time comes. My dad passed away almost a year ago and I have a pipe that I gave him for Christmas a couple years back. It's banged up but I smoke it regularly now and its nice to hold and use a piece of his life. I wish you the best with your decision.

Macattack: I was hoping someone would notice the keyboard. Another one of my favorite things to do.
TJ: I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I would imagine it being bitter-sweet to smoke his pipe. Concerning the Dr. Grabow: If you really like it, I'd propose a trade. However, I've read the rules, and would rather not do any trading/selling until I've established a solid presence in the community, and have gained your guys' trust and respect, as I have for all of you.

It's an M-Audio Keystudio, Cajunguy. Just a midi controller. I sync it up to garageband and humbly make bangin' hip-hop beats that go boom boom boom.
