Somehow the zombie craze missed me, but I'm interested to hear movie buffs and others try to figure out the underlying imagery. What mental puzzle piece do zombies represent? One theory is, they are the apathetic. I've always thought it was just the human fixation on the fact that life ends, when the whole reality of living is that it goes on, that is, it seems to; we are always conscious of and intuiting the future, whether five minutes or five years. Anyway, like Stephen King, Romero certainly knew what inspired terror. The fact that Romero produced some of his films on a shoestring is instructive; many of the elements of high-priced cast and special effects would have only gotten in the way, and he was clear-headed and knowing about this.
