Hi all! Pleased to meet you. I'm a young pipe smoker from NH (hence Granite Man as a username). I've recently re taken up pipe smoking after setting down my Grabows for a couple years. So far I've found it relaxing, enjoyable and a great time for introspection. I've lurked on the forums the better part of two months but until today had not signed up for discussion.
There are times when the smoke is immensely enjoyable for me and other times were I feel like I'm messing it up. I had a wonderful smoke of Captain Black Gold from an old Grabow Billiard I had - but was unable to recreate the experience. I've noticed that while driving my cadence tends to burn the tobacco very hot and the smoke is less enjoyable - likewise if I'm doing any labor beyond sitting on the porch with a coffee or scotch. The best pipe I have to slow down with is my Trevi 320 - it's almost impossible to smoke that one hot.
My favorite blends are english (965, Nightcap, Morning Mixture). Of those I only ever have issue with Morning Mixture being hot. I also like to smoke aromatics in the evening (CB Gold, Caio Vanilla and Moontrance) out of a Dublin style Savinelli pipe. Those tend to get very hot and I think I'm smoking them wrong as I get the same problem from the Savinelli as I do in a cob.
Any thoughts or advice would be wonderful and very much appreciated. Your collective wisdom is a huge blessing for a young guy like me.

Welcome to the forums.
#1 tip/advise - Don't overthink it. Find the right cadence that suits you and just enjoy. You'll find your own method of packing, lighting, tamping and smoking. You can try different methods or variations (as I'm sure many will give) but in the end you have to find what works for you... so patience and just enjoy.

Welcome to the forums. It is good to see another New Englander. Just remember slow and steady and your tongue will thank you.

Thanks gents. I know a lot of it comes down to trial and error. Slowing down is one of those things I should probably work on in life - that and patience!

Thank you JPM! Here's a picture that I hope sparks nice memories of NH. This is a beautiful patch of farm land about a mile up the road from my house. My dog and I enjoy the walk and the views.

Welcome to the forum.
As for cadence just slow sipping like your drinking a fine whiskey.

Thanks gents. Had a wonderful smoke this morning. I believe that I had not been packing quite as firmly as I should have. That's why the tobacco was burning to hot but I was having a hard time keeping it lit. I used a little more tobacco, enjoyed a longer smoke and had much less bitterness and moisture.
I genuinely appreciate everyone's help and experience on this forum. It's a wonderful journey for sure!
