Questions on Finish-Carey Pipes

I have several Carey Magic inch pipes that I enjoy . The bowls need some finish work , however . First question is : is this finish what is known as rusticated or sand blasted ? (This is a google photo . The camera on my phone is foggy)

That appears to be lightly sand blasted.

Ok , maybe I should have explained : I have 4 Carey pipes , 2 sand blasted & 2 smooth . They are my favorite smokes . But the finishes need some TLC . Black around the top of the bowl , minor scuffs , really dull overall .

Do I sand don the smooth ones & stain & put a finish on ?

What about the blasted one ? Paint stripper ?

Can you post images of all of the pipes in question, with a few highlighting your areas of concern? That would help you get better answers to your questions.

I appreciate your reply , but like I said , my phone won't take distinguishable pics .
The pipes aren't really damaged , they just need to be spiffied up (as in refinished)

Wood isn't my strong suit .

Pick up some Renaissance Wax and polish them up. That might be enough to do trick.
I'm assuming that you've already cleaned them up.

I’d recommend diving through dozens of restoration/refurbish jobs HERE to get a broad idea of what you’re getting into before just sanding away.
Plus there’s lots of info on YouTube, etc…

Pics will help to determine what the finish actually is. Most pipes are just wax, some have other finishes. Take your pipes outside and take pictures in the shade. A shelac or lacquered pipe will likely still be shiney. You are asking folks to work in the dark. You might make a hell of a mess with the wrong information.

If these are your favorites Id do some experimenting on some junk pipes before lauching into something important.

The common answer to dark around the bowl is saliva and a soft rag. It will do a lot. Take your time.
